Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Anybody having problems with FTP Optimized publishing (build 2759_3962) ?

Whenever I turn on Optimized FTP publishing and start using it I get all sorts of errors like:

A5 hanging or crashing (forced quit)
    html editor generating errors
    component editor generating errors
    publishing stalling
or simply opening another workspace throws me out.

The errors usually complain about variables not found.

There's really no systematic something I can detect: when I repeat the same sequence things work fine then some time later they don't.

I really love the feature as it speeds up publishing drastically but it it is not usable for me.

    Anybody ?

I have been having issues for a while now in the latest official release and pre-release builds. I have never been able to find a repeatable scenario to submit a bug report on but it has gotten better in the latest builds. These issues are also not limited to the optimized publishing as they happen just as much when I publish to localhost for testing.

      Luke,
Can you be more specific as to your problems?

Normally I get an error window saying a variable is missing or just gibberish then alpha five crashes, the only way to recover is to force close the program and reopen it. I have the xbasic debugger pop-up on error feature enabled so normally the xbasic debugger will come up after the error message. I have not been able to track down anything of importance in the debugger though because I am not sure what to look for in alpha's code.

This morning I had alpha idle with only one a5w page open in the editor & I was testing for session timeouts by browsing to localhost. All of a sudden the localhost pages were not being served anymore, so I decided to restart the server but that gave me a series of errors & I had to quit alpha. All errors referred to variables that could not be found. I start wondering if optimized publishing is not just a trigger for some sort of other problem?

Even though we've been instructed not to post issues on this forum regarding pre-releases, I hope it's ok to respond here (since concept is already posted...)

I'm on build 2848-3987 pre-release, and on August 15, I sent following video to Alpha about getting random variable errors: http://screencast.com/t/ljskyRsA9

            Their response was:
This has all of the characteristics of an out of memory condition. Just close Alpha Five and restart. If you open and close builders often with complex components, the amount of data in memory rise. Under the "right" conditions, this can cause odd errors.
Since others are having these issues, I believe you ought to let Alpha know so they know that it's not just me. I did not used to get these kinds of errors. Now I making sure to click the Save button a lot more.

Carol that is exactly what I am seeing but for me it seems to be triggered when I do optimized publishing apart from an occasional incident but with the same kind of error (variable missing)

I was experiencing the same issues on the latest official release and this is one of the reasons I switched to the pre-release builds so I feel it is relevant to discuss on the board. Also the problem is not limited to optimized FTP publishing for me, it is application wide, it sometimes happens when just saving a dialog or grid. Next time it happens I will post a screen shot of the error.

I had a few crashes today, all with different errors. Here is one I took a screen shot of, this happened when I went to publish a modified grid from the web projects control panel. I have launch xbasic debugger on error enabled so that is why the debugger is open.
                      publish_errors.PNG

I should have typed in "projName" and "SelectedFilename" in the debugger watch window to see their values, I will do this if it happens again.
