Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Connection strings error - Application Server Deployment

    Hi everyone,

I'm trying to get my Alpha Five web application running on a remote server. I believe that the alpha application server is set up correctly, and that the published alpha five files are correctly set up within the server. The error I'm getting (pictured below) clearly relates to the data sources, which in this case are two Microsoft Access .accdb files.

From reading various forum threads and some of the wiki articles (such as this) I think the problem may be to do with the connection string aliases used during the publishing process. I've tried modifying these, but with no success so far. The current entry I have under the publishing profile I'm using is "[PathAlias.ADB_Path] = C:\Alpha Five\Data\coecontact002". That gives the correct location of the .accdb files on the remote server, but I'm still getting the error.

Could anyone provide a working example or suggestion for the connection string aliases?

Furthermore, is any additional software required on the server to access the .accdb files, or is the application server capable of doing that itself?

    Error:

Any help would be great. Thanks in advance!

      What are the .accdb files?

Hi Peter. I'm not quite sure what you mean. If you mean literally what are the .accdb files, they are Microsoft Access 2010 database files, which I'm using as the data source for my alpha five site. In this case they are named C_Data.accdb and C_Licensee.accdb.

Sorry if I've misunderstood what you were asking.

No, you understood. I've only used Access once or twice in my life. Anyway, I think you problem is that you are trying to set a path alias rather than a SQL connection string.

Re: Connection strings error - Application Server Deployment

I think you're right Peter - the problem is that I don't know how the aliases and new connection strings for the server should be set up. The wiki gives an generalized description but nothing that I've been able to translate into an actual implementation.

Does anyone have any ideas or experience with this?

Re: Connection strings error - Application Server Deployment

Thanks for your reply Peter. I've followed the steps you suggested, and have built + published the connection strings for the data location on the server. Unfortunately I'm still getting the original error.

Any thoughts? Thanks again for your help so far.

Re: Connection strings error - Application Server Deployment

If you are still getting the same error, it suggests that you don't have the correct path on the server to the data in the connection string. I'm sure the problem is easy to fix, but hard to fix over the message board, if you know what I mean.

Re: Connection strings error - Application Server Deployment

You may well be right Peter, however I've double-checked the location specified by the connection strings and I'm fairly sure they're correct. It's entirely possible that I'm simply making a silly mistake of some kind, but at the moment I can't work out what it might be.

                    You can see for yourself:

                    Development Machine:
                    Connection Strings 001.jpg

                    Remote Server:
                    Connection Strings 002.jpg

Better yet you can go to www.coecontact.info, which is the demo site I'm trying to set up, and see the error for yourself. I've added a small grid with text from the database to the log-in page, so that gives the error as well. Anything past the login screen just returns the error page shown in my first post.

                    Thanks again.

It looks like your path might be wrong. You have the file name in the path. Try removing the file name and possible the trailing backslash.

Re: Connection strings error - Application Server Deployment

Thanks again for your help Peter. As it turns out, I seem to have stumbled across the solution. I installed the "Microsoft Access Database Engine 2010 Redistributable" found at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down....aspx?id=13255 and now the website seems to work perfectly. I had already installed an ODBC driver (I forget which), but it seems this one is also necessary.

Re: Connection strings error - Application Server Deployment

Timothy, Did you download the 2010 Redistributable file on the development machine? or the Server? and do you remember which ODBC driver you installed? I am assuming you downloaded the driver to your development machine.

                          Thanks!
