GetValue of Quick Search

I used Alpha5 to create a standard SEARCH/LIST/DETAIL page.
How do I get the value of the Quick Search field? How is it referenced.
All I see are method to perform a search but I'd like to obtain the value that's in the field.

If you mean in javascript, then something like:
var myvalue = {grid.object}.getValue('S', 'YOURSEARCHFIELD');
or
var myvalue = $gvs('{grid.object}.S.YOURSEARCHFIELD');

I learned from AlphaSoftware that that I can't use .getValue() since this is only for fields in the Search Part, Grid Part or Detail View part.
Instead I have to use lower level javascript. For example:

var val = $('{grid.componentname}.QUICKSEARCH').value;

to set the value you would do:

$('{grid.componentname}.QUICKSEARCH').value = 'some value';

as in...

$('GRID1.QUICKSEARCH').value = 'foovbar';

Here's how I could have figured this out:

1. if I used firebug in FireFox I could examine the quick search control. I would have seen that the Id was something like

GRID1.QUICKSEARCH


2. GRID1 is the Grid alias. so that gets replaced by {grid.componentName)

3. If I wanted to use standard javascript (this is not specific to a5) you would use getElementById()
so I might have something like this:

var ele = document.getElementByID('{grid.componentname}.QUICKSEARCH');

this gets you a pointer to the element.

writing document.getElementByID() is not very elegant, so instead I could use the $ function in the a5 javascript library.
So instead I can write:

var ele = $('{dialog.componentname}.QUICKSEARCH');

Once I have a pointer to the element, you can just read its value property

e.g.
var val = ele.value

of combine everything into one line

var val = $('{dialog.componentname}.QUICKSEARCH').value
