Get parent value problem with row expander

Hi, I want to reference a value in a parent grid from my child grid detail view. I followed Selwyn's advice in this thread.

My problem is that it only works when I expand a row the first time. If I expand a row previously expanded the value of my data variable is from the previously expanded row, not the currently selected row. I've tried putting the first function below in other events such as onrowselect but get the same problem.

My ongridrendercomplete event is:
var po = {grid.Object}.getParentObject()
var row = po._selectedRow;
var data = po.getValue('G','JOINT',row);
{grid.object}._myjoint = data;

Then I call my js function from the showhide expression of a field - although if I call it from anywhere I get the same result. I'm just using an alert to test.

var po = {grid.Object}.getParentObject();
if(po) {

data = {grid.object}._myjoint
}
window.alert(data);
}

Remember that the ongridrendercomplete only fires the first time.

In your case, better to set a global js variable in the parent (row expander) grid's onRowSelect event, like:
window._myjoint = {grid.object}.getValue('G','JOINT',{Grid.object}._selectedRow);

Then, retrieve this when you need it from anywhere at all.

Another option would be to retrieve the parent field as needed within your function rather than trying to set an intermediate grid variable.

Thanks Andy but it still doesn't work because the parent grid remains expanded when I go back to a previously selected record and therefore the global var doesn't get reset. I tried setting the global var in the onfocus event too but no luck. It's the same issue for the same reason I'm afraid.

Update - setting Auto Refresh on Expand to True under the Row Expander properties forces the child to be selected and therefore the global var is set correctly.

Just in case you wanted to try the second suggested option, no js code needed other than the actual show/hide function, for example ...

  var returnvar = false;
  var myjoint = '';
  var po = {grid.Object}.getParentObject();
  if(po) {
    myjoint = po.getValue('G','JOINT',po._selectedRow);
    if(myjoint==='Hip') returnvar = true;
  }
  alert('Joint Type: ' + myjoint); //testing only
  //return returnvar;  //return result
}

Thanks Andy, sorry to lean on you again but I'm not getting any responses to this thread where I'm seeing buggy behavior with show/hide for a Tab Pane.

If you have time I would appreciate some of your wisdom.
