Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Emailing from a grid problem

All, I've run into a problem sending a confirmation email from my web site which is using a grid.

I'm using the action script to send an email via a button. All I get is an error stating message not sent due to an error.

I know I can send an email via the web server this works fine, also if I change the action script to read from my GMAIL SMTP it works fine. It seems to be a problem using the default email settings via a grid. BTW I've confirmed these settings are the same as on my Alpha web-server.

    Any help would be great.

As you see the server side works sending an email any troubleshooting tip to find out why it would not send from the web app?

Unless that pic is from the same machine the app server is on, it usually indicates a port is being
blocked, either by the isp/host or the local firewall.

Gregg, thank you for the reply this is not the same machine as the Web server runs from. So I'm not 100% following you. Does the desktop version also use the same port when sending out emails?

        Thanks, John

Re: Emailing from a grid problem

There is a chance the webserver's firewall is blocking outbound port 25.
If the server's firewall is not blocking port 25, check to see if the ISP is blocking port 25.

Port 25 is often blocked as a simple method to combat spam.

Gregg I have pinged the ISP no problem out of port 25 also have no rules set for the firewall to block this port. Any other way to test it? Very strange that it work fine with Google's SMTP.

Who is the ISP that you are connecting to the internet with?

AT&T and some cable companies block port 25 to most mail servers requiring you to use their mail server to 'protect from spammers'

The only consistent thing about the blockages that I've found is inconsistency.....

Hello Al, I'm using Optimum on-line. I'm able to telnet and ping them with no problems.

Re: Emailing from a grid problem

                  hello

i used the following steps and on testing it succeeds.
i did not, however, test on the grid using the optimum so as not mess with my working gmail set up
i used mail.optonline.net for incoming and outgoing. if your user id is [email protected] then use mail.optimum.net
no for ssl in incoming or outgoing.
i filled in user name and password in the outgoing setup portion too
in the advance ports i used incoming 110 outgoing 587
with this i tested the profile it succeeded.
if this does not answer i will set up and run on a grid for you to see if it works as well.

                  addendum:
i just checked my optimum email
the test emails are there in the inbox.

                  follow up:
checked with email_send2 function in a grid, works well as expected.

Re: Emailing from a grid problem

OK I have ruled out that port 25 is the problem, I've opened port 465 and still the same result. Just to be clear I can test this from my web server with no problem sending the mail. I also can use my gmail account and the emails work from my web page. I can ping the smpt that I'm using, however, it seems to be a problem when using it in the grid. Any way to place debug (1) to see what is not happening?
