Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Reports with Arguments not working in build 3044-4041

I have several databases, built in v8-v10.5, that all have reports that worked just fine in v11--until I added the 3044-4041 patch.

Now I cannot pull up any reports that have arguments. Is anyone else experiencing this? I even tried a brand new test database (workspace) and get the same problem. If there is an argument, the report fails.

It works in localhost, but not on the production server. I've double checked the path aliases (as Selwyn always says that 99% of problems where something works on localhost, but not in production has to do with path aliases).

Here is a zip of the new workspace I created, in case someone wants to try it for me to see if you can pull up a report on a production server.

    I must be missing something...

I know the pre-release patch released a couple of days after that fixed a few other report-related issues (http://downloads.alphasoftware.com/A...easenotes.html), and I'll note that if you search the forum I think you'll find more comments about bugs in 3044-4041. I tried using the release prior to that one to avoid said bugs but had other issues in that patch as well. I've been successfully using pre-release 3147-4060 in development and production for a few weeks now without any bugs I've found. I don't know about newer patches though.

        Stephen,
Your test app works fine using the builds of 29Dec2012 and 22Jan2013.
I recommend you upgrade to one of these two as they appear to be stable.
        Andy.

          Andy,

Thank you. Are you using these in a production environment (despite Alpha's warnings not to)? That's what's been holding me back a bit. I'm sure they warn just to CYA, but it still makes me a little nervous.

I think I'm going to ask for a sandbox on my server so I can try these things out first. I thought the localhost would do that for me, but no luck.

            I am.

When I've moved my project to the latest official release candidate and it's obviously full of bugs, the only options are to move forward to a pre-release build or take steps backward. I'm also cautious and intentional about the official release build and pre-release builds I use, delaying any upgrade and then scouring the notes and forum for information about known problems. It's still always a bit of a crapshoot, but the pre-releases are sometimes more stable than the last official release (case in point).

Thanks, Chris. That helps. I had thought I had checked on 3022-4041 enough, but apparently not.

I've been using 3044-4041 for a couple of months - no problems at all. I have reports w. arguments - they work just fine. Sorry, don't mean to rain on your parade - because I know what it's like when problems arise for no good discernible reason.

That's really interesting Peter--you must be favored by the Alpha gods--search the forum for 4041 and you'll find quite a few references, and the pre-release notes show a number of bug fixes released within a day or two of it.

                    If only!

I know there are bugs; but none have affected me. Well, all kinds of things have affected me - just not those bugs listed.

Have you re-published components that have reports with arguments? Just wondering if maybe it only shows up after a component is updated in 4041.

Yes. It's something that I have been working on these last several days.

Frustrating! I can't figure out why it's not working for me, then. As I said earlier, it works fine on localhost. In production it craps out on me. Here is the error screen:

Has anyone tried my test db on 3044-4041? Just wondering if it works for someone who isn't having this problem otherwise.

I did for the 29Dec and it worked...upgrade and move on if you can.
Note that the difference between and official build and a prerelease is not much at all. Once nothing major has been messed with, they are fine. The trick is to let a week or two pass before going live with one.
