Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Cascading Dropdowns from MSsql not cascading

    Hia guys,

I'm trying to set up some cascading drop downs to filter data.

I have an sql table filled with the different categories, and with no cascading: the drop downs populate with all the data as expected (category, group, subgroup)

When I tick the "Cascading" and set a parent however, the drop downs fail to populate, and in fact the "Display value for no choices found" text doesn't show either.

When looking in chrome's console, when I select an Item from the first (non cascading dropdown) the following error shows:

Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'length' of undefined a5.js:8450

Any ideas on how I can make these things work?

What's odd is I've tried a previously working component into the page, which gives the same error on that page, but works in the place it was originally developed.

      Ok: progress:

      <script src="javascript/jquery.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script>

If I load in jquery - then the graphs and all other shiny works, but the dropdowns fail.
If I remove jquery: the dropdowns work, but everything else then fails.

So I'm assuming there's a level of conflict here: has anyone heard of this and/or have a solution?

Still getting "Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'length' of undefined" after i select an item in my first drop down, and the second is not populating with data.

Really struggling to make any further progress and getting rather frustrated :(

By taking out my jquery libraries, and loading in only from alpha, the cascades work fine, but I get

Uncaught TypeError: Object #<HTMLDocument> has no method 'ready'

When trying to run my other scripts?

            Hi Sam,

We were having similar issues with dropdowns and cascades but have not had a chance to look into it. Some dropdowns crash if the cascade is checked and work ok if cascade is unchecked. Will check details tomorrow and post.
We are using the latest full build.

            Chris

Re: Cascading Dropdowns from MSsql not cascading

              SOLVED:

The problem seems to be collisions in jQuery libraries. I've worked around it by setting alpha5 to load jQuery from Google, in noConflict mode, and then defined any handwritten jQuery as jquery. rather than $.

This seems to have fixed the problem for now! thanks for your help guys.

Re: Cascading Dropdowns from MSsql not cascading

I know this is an old thread, but here in 2016-January I'm having an "Uncaught TypeError" only when I deploy to an active webserver. The same UX works fine local to my laptop.

When it first occurred I started guessing and checking all involved table fields (since the detail mentioned the word "set"). It turns out that one of my tables had a dysfunctional "auto increment" and that fixed the problem... LOCAL TO MY DEVELOPMENT PC.

However, an apparently identical Alpha Webserver and SQL SERVER environment on my production server now returns:

Uncaught TypeError: Cannot set property 'display' of undefined

There is no helpful detail once expanded (uniquely named on-the-fly javascript elements).

If by chance you've had additional experience with "Uncaught TypeError" messages I would be pleased to hear about it.

                Thanks!
