Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Javascript - What, Where and How 2 Part Question

I have two grids, grid1 is linked to grid2. Grid1 has bill address fields and Grid2 has service address fields. Most customers will have the same address for billing and service. When a new record is entered in grid2, I need to check a checkbox or click a button to copy the billing address info from grid1 to the service address fields in grid2. If the service address is different than the shipping address, then the user can simply add the service address.

What is the best way to do this, checkbox or button? Would I use javascript or serverside Xbasic? I presume the code will be the same, either way.

    Thanks for the insight.

    Solution:

I createdd a small grid composed of the customer_id and address fields. The I did a lookup for the Svc_address field in grid2. It looks up the bill address field in the lookup grid. It's really cool the way the genie laid it out. I mapped the fields and then used the linking field (customer_id as the dynamic filter. Do the lookup and a small grid pops up with a select button, press the button, the lookup grid closes and the values are in the service address fields. The only thing better would be it it was done automatically. Sort of like if I created a function and the the function ran only when a new record in grid 2 was created.

Have you thought of the look-up and fill in fields action javascript? You can use any control that has events.

      Hi Frank,

Are you referring to "lookup" as I did above or are you referring to another lookup?

        Ken,

An example using an action button. Click the button and the fields on grid a are filled in with data from table b. I think this is what you are looking to do.

In the onclick event of a button or image or whatever, open action javascript, in the actions panel select Lookup and fill in fields. Follow the dialogs. I would post an image but I still can't post images to the Alpha forum.

Thanks Frank, I try that later this evening. Post an image to the mesage board? I thought I was the only one. LOL

Frank, This is way cool. Exactly what I needed and so flexible, beyond my expectations.

          Thanks

The Lookup & Fill option is great if the user has already submitted the data in table b to the server, but I am looking for something a bit different.

When a user fills in his/her address in the "home address" fields, I want to be able to copy that data to the "shipping address" fields before the submit button has been clicked. That way all the data from both the home address and shipping address fields are submitted at once.

Any idea how to do that?

Seems to me I did see an example in a video, but that was quite awhile ago. Check the dialog vids.

Yeah I thought so too, but I checked the videos before posting this message and didn't see anything.

I'll go through them again to make double sure I didn't miss it.

What you want to do is a fairly common task. Since there is documentation for the DT to do this, I would think there would be documentation to do in in a grid or in the detail section of a grid.

                    hello

you should be able to do with getvalue and setvalue of the detail view inline javascript using on change event for the address fields.
