Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Web server configuration and speed

We just migrated to a new server with Zebrahost a few hours ago, after two days of testing. Gotta tell ya, this is the magic carpet right here.

We had a 2-core VPS from another provider that was doing OK - no great shakes, but certainly satisfactory. The new server delivers all pages to users in about 1/3 the previous time, and much of the app in mere moments. Guys using it say it's almost native-app-like -- even for some very complex, data-heavy pages with layers of linked grids.

Zebrahost has fixed us up with a Hyper-V server, 4-core CPU at 3.40 Ghz and 8 GB of RAM. But one of the biggest improvements I think comes from the RAID array of Solid State Drives - 4 of 'em at 50 GB each for an effective 93 GB of useable space.

I also hooked up an identical setup for another client last week. So far we don't have a web app in place, but I'm using it for some other major batch processing. One big batch I had on the old server reliably clocked in at 43 minutes per run. The new Zebrahost server finishes in 6 minutes, 16 seconds.

If you need serious speed, this is the way to go and I think the price is very reasonable. The people I'm working with are happier than a room full of 5 year-olds on Christmas morning.

Re: Web server configuration and speed

    Hi Steve,
Glad to hear about the good results with this top notch configuration. I have couple of questions:
    1. Can you share how much something like this cost yearly?
    2. What about redundancy? will this VPS promoted to another Hyper-visor host in case of hardware failure?

    Thanks!!!

      1. If you're interested in the price, I'll suggest you contact Zebrahost.

      2. With the RAID in place and all the associated monitoring, I'm not too concerned at the moment about failure and don't see a need to pay for the extra backup at this time. This particular application is headed toward a world-wide network of servers and load-balancers, which is how we'll be covering this issue later on. When we can afford it and when the time comes, the one piece we'll probably double-up on is the SQL database server which right now is in the same box as our single web server.

I wonder how the SSD's will degrade with a lot of writes over time like you would probably see in this type of implementation. It would be interesting to monitor the speed on a regular basis and see what happens. I've had excellent results with SSD's on my computers, they really speed things up, but I only install the OS and applications on them. I keep the data on a secondary HDD.

Very interesting, is there a way to do a load-balancers with Alpha servers now? if so, is there any documentation out there explaining how to setting this up?

As far as I know there's never been an issue with load balancers and A5. Nothing special about A5 here. As long as the balancers maintain session affinity (sticky sessions) for an app using the security framework.

I decided a long time ago not to be the guy in charge of the servers and balancers -- got enough already to learn and worry about. So while I've learned a lot, the experts are still people like Zebrahost. I ask, I receive.

Fair enough, I'll check with Zebrahost then. Thanks again!!!

That is exciting to hear Steve. Sounds like a great setup! I am currently using Zebrahost to do the load balancing among 3 hyper v servers, along with a dedicated server and a MySQL database server. I am hoping the new IIS-based Web Server scales nicely when (IF??????) it is ever released. It was supposed to be released a few months after the initial release of V11 but obviously didn't meet that timeline. Hopefully it will appear with the release of V12.

                  gregincolumbus,

can you contact me offline at [email protected]. We are looking to at options with Zebrahost (including your configuration) and would appreciate getting feedback on how it is working for you.

                  Thanks,
                  Jay

Re: Web server configuration and speed

I have a client who just moved from a top line dedicated server at ZebraHost to a similar server, but with SSD drives in a raid array. The difference was astonishing! Everything runs at least 4 times faster!

My client's app is a mature app with 90+ users in 15 retail stores running 16 to 18 hours per day 7 days per week. Many of his tables are half million records (MySQL) with a good mix of grids and reports. So, in his case, the speed of the drives made a major difference.

I had not expected to see this kind of improvement since we both thought the old server was very fast. But, the users in the stores have been calling him and asking what he did to speed everything up so much.

He says the cost is about 20% more, but if the clerks can process orders faster, they can handle more orders in a day and that will be a big savings. Plus, if the load is processed faster, then he can put off the next upgrade to multiple servers and load balancing, and that will reduce his future cost. So, in my opinion, for the right type of application, going to the solid state drives is a no-brainer. If a drive fails, Clive can hot swap a replacement in and there is no down time. More speed, real savings, great choice.

Zebrahost co-locates at SoftLayer. One of the guys I work with got hisself a rare personal tour of the SoftLayer facility in Singapore, with Clive's help. Very very cool place - I'd have pictures if they were allowed. You need a passcard to get in the bathroom - and back out as I understand it.

Not AlphaFive .. but thought I'd throw this in .. I also work on Progress databases - big ERP systems. We swapped our Progress servers over to SSD drives about nine months ago and performance has been improved 75%. No issues thus far. These servers host 18 60GB databases; 3 of those are production - 12 are refreshed (overwritten) weekly - the others are updated daily with transactions from production.
