Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Managing Data in the Security Framework - Pulling my hair out!!!!

I've gone through the videos and read through the posts here but I cannot get this to work.

Why is it SO difficult to manage the security framework outside of the developer? Isn't Alpha supposed to be moving to the mobile market??? Managing the security framework from developer seems like a legacy feature of making a desktop application. I was hoping to see some videos for V12 showing better (easier) ways to handle this but nothing yet.

All I want to do is create grids that allow me to add/edit my users outside of the developer. I understand and am fine with setting up groups in developer, but it is frustrating that such an important component is tied to my desktop (managing in developer).

Has anyone had success in creating a simple grid to manage the security framework without having to patch together functions, scripts, dropdown boxes, etc...? Can someone at Alpha PLEASE make a video to make a little easier to understand?

Please forgive my venting session here... I am not a developer or programmer, just an average joe with a business solution for the energy industry.

Using a UX component (Dialog) it is quite straightforward.
And there ara some videos too. In the video finder you will find them.

It's really straight forward using a dialog2 component. You can use the action scripting to validate and and save the security info. Also in the after validate event you can can save the user info to a data table if you want to keep more than an ID and a password.

        Roger/Lee,

You are both right. After a night's sleep and a nice long hot shower I was able to come back and give it another shot.

I am learning that such is the process sometimes, you make significant progress and then something stumps you.

I am still not totally happy but it looks like I have achieved the basic functionality of managing my users outside of the developer. It would not be fair to leave out that I have been able to accomplish A LOT with Alpha V11 and expect to accomplish even more with V12.

I have no experience with software development and know nothing of programming and yet I almost have a fully functioning oil and gas software application up and running with my first customer (my job) looking forward to using it. Thank you Alpha!!

        Back to work!

Rapid Application Development systems always have a slight flaw. You can do 90% of what you want almost effortlessly but the last 10% can drive you crazy with frustration.

I agree with Jose. I found on this link http://news.alphasoftware.com/v11pre...urityFramework under the "Dialog Component - Managing Data in the Security Framework" the person who talks on this video is like reading. It doesn't have a teaching sense and realy hard to understand it especially this Security Framework issue. It suppossed to be straight forward and that's what they keep saying which is true if you are a developer. But if you are just an average guy like myself, it would be a frustration.
