Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Carriage Return On Text Area Field

    We have a text field that won't allow a "new line" when hitting return but instead sends us back to the above look-up field. However, if there hasn't been a selection in the look-up field then the return key does give a "new line" in the text field. Is this an issue with the look-up field (an option that can be set so it doesn't stay "live" for lack of a better term), or is it an issue with the text field?

    Alpha5v11 build 3044-4041

    Thanks

    Do you mean a memo field? A workaround is to trap the memo's enter key (onkeypress event).

      Thanks Andy for responding!

      Yes it is a memo field (text area control on a dialog2).

      Unfortunately I do not know what "trap the memo's enter key" means. I know what is meant by the onkeypress event but I am not familiar how to do what you are saying.

        Re: Carriage Return On Text Area Field

        I In onkeypress event, you could place something like:

        Code:
        var keyCode = event.charCode || event.keyCode;
        if(keyCode == 13) {
            event.cancelBubble = true;
            event.returnValue = false;
            if (event.stopPropagation) {
              event.stopPropagation();
              event.preventDefault();
            }
            //return false;
        }
        I haven't tested or anything....sorry, but I am never near a development machine...

          What happens if you press the shift key and the enter key?

            Re: Carriage Return On Text Area Field

            If we hit shift and enter key together, the cursor advances to the next line like it is supposed to.

              Re: Carriage Return On Text Area Field

              Ok the same thing is happening here. When a dialog is opened as a popup window then the enter doesn't do what you want it to do. Workaround use the shift key.
              If the same dialog is opened as a row expander then there is no problem.

                Re: Carriage Return On Text Area Field

                That's fine for us but it is not a real solution for our users....

                There has got to be a better way.

                  Re: Carriage Return On Text Area Field

                  Not saying that we should settle for workarounds, but here are a few ideas for you:

                  Code:
                  <div onkeypress="var keyCode = event.charCode || event.keyCode; if(keyCode == 13) { {grid.object}.submitSearchForm();;  return false;} ">
                  If some part or all of the grid goes in here, then the enter key will trigger the submit button....
                  </div>
                  Change grid.object to dialog.object if it is a dialog.

                  Or, you can use javascript or jQuery to add the onkeypress event (as per above) to one of the existing named divs within the component - place the code in onRenderComplete, for example. Use Firebug to figure out which div to attach it to.

                  Or you can add a container and add the javascript to the onkeypress event.

                  This type of thing works for both grids and dialogs that are not behaving correctly when you hit the enter key.

                    Thanks for trying to help Andy!

                    Unfortunately, none of this is fixing the problem. I know there have been issues in the past with Look-ups / Edit-Combos. I wonder if I should submit this as a "bug"?

                    By the way, this is a Dialog component.

                      Re: Carriage Return On Text Area Field

                      Sorry, for the dialog, your onkeypress code would look more like:
                      Code:
                      var keyCode = event.charCode || event.keyCode;
                      if(keyCode == 13) {
                        {dialog.object}.submit();
                        return false;
                      }
                      This type of code can typically be placed in specific input fields or added to existing divs.

                      Should work fine...
