Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Click button Set Value of Fields

    Hi

    I'm sure this is easy (and likely uses what i call my nemesis 'java script'), however, I need help on how to do the following:

    I want to click a button "Complete" which is located on each row of a grid. on the OnClick event I need certain value to be filled in.
    I.e. I want to set the Value of a TextBox field to "Completed", the Value of a drop down field to "Pending Processing", and exam score to "100".

    Note the Drop Down box is storing a number; therefore, i'm thinking that the onclick event will likely need to send the Number to the drop down box and not the Text value.

    Any help or direction would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks
    Lee

    Re: Click button Set Value of Fields

    Hi Lee,

    There is a fairly quick way to accomplish this. For the button's "onClick" Javascript event, select the "Text Mode" radio button, and then click on the "Insert Grid Method" link at the bottom of the window. From there find "SetValue" (use the Filter box to narrow the list). There are lots of examples for this method, but I think what you're looking for is something like this:

    Code:
    //Set value in 'LASTNAME' field from the Grid part, 'current row'.
    //Note that field name must be uppercase.
    {grid.object}.setValue('G','[COLOR="#DAA520"][B]LASTNAME[/B][/COLOR]',{grid.rowNumber},'[B][COLOR="#40E0D0"]Smith'[/COLOR][/B]);
    //Submit the data!
    {grid.Object}.submitGridPartRow({Grid.RowNumber});
    {grid.Object}.submitGridPart();
    //Suggestion to either force a refresh of the entire Grid or just the GridRow (select one)
    {grid.Object}.refresh();
    //or
    {grid.Object}.refreshRow({Grid.RowNumber});
    Change the FIELDNAME and the Value in the code above. Create a SetValue method for each textbox (or dropdown) field that will need to change when the button is clicked. Finally, you'll probably want to refresh the grid so choose either the entire grid or the gridrow option. Also note that your grid must be editable and allow updates or the changes won't get saved (this tripped me up before! )

      Thanks Melissa, That is some great info. Now I know where to look--which is half the battle.
      Thanks a million.

        You're welcome. I could have sworn that there was a video somewhere too, but I can't find it. So either I'm searching under the wrong thing, or maybe it was part of a video on something else, or I dreamed it up...

          Something else to consider: you don't have to Submit or Refresh as part of the onClick event in the case where end users will be "updating" multiple records. In that case, you'd probably want to give users the option to click the "update" button on several grid rows and then submit ALL the changes at once using the grid's Submit button (on the your Update Settings property). Using the Grid Submit button should automatically force a grid refresh (although you'll want to check the settings on that). If you use the Grid Submit, then you can also include the grid Cancel button, which would allow users an opportunity to undo those changes without saving them to the database. Depends on what works best for your scenario. But using the grid Submit would help limit the number of callbacks to your database.

            Hi Everyone,

            Does anyone knows how to add a button to a detail view part of a list control, so that when clicked, it will insert a selected values(fields) from the list control table to another table.

            Am trying to add a button title APPLY, so that when a user click it will insert record to another table.

            Best Regards,

            Chinedu

              You can add a button in the fields area of the list builder, but the xbasic that you will need to open the table and insert the record (and any validation rules) is beyond what I can help you with.
              take it a step at a time, search the forums for cn.open and look at how others open a table and insert records and cn.close() the connection.

              Others can probably help you once they get an idea of what exactly your looking to do.
