Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Customising chart on grid

    Hi,

Still a newbie to Alpha5. I'm building a web with charts based on a grid element (disabling the main component and showing only the chart), all this placed on an .a5w page. My main problem is about customising the content.

For instance, on a bar chart in Access or Excel you can:
    • Show the number on top of every bar.
    • Customise colors, legends, fonts.
    • Set the start point of the X axis (0, 10, ...)
    • Hide the 'Series 1' message that appears by default right of the chart.

Is this possible in a Grid component displayed as a CHART (alternate view)? If yes, is there a link to the help or video that clearly explains how to do this?

A little help on how to use the Expression builder to show the chart content would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance,

To answer your question, The chart alternate view section in Alpha 5 is a bit anemic. It doesn't have a lot of features yet. All the videos are for creating charts from other methods. I'm not experienced with charts myself, so I can't tell you what you should do instead, but thought I'd at least let you know that you are not alone in having trouble with the alternate views chart options.

Thanks Larry. I knew the alternate view was not ideal. My question, right now, is on whether the option of showing numbers on top of the bars IS or IS NOT available at all.

I've contacted Alpha 5 customer service but they have refused even to give an answer. If the feature is there, least they should say is:' Yes, that is available', or 'No, it's not, don't waste your time trying to generate it'.

Quite disappointed with the company right now.

        Re: Customising chart on grid

        Hi,
As Larry said the Alt view Charts were very much a "first cut" (to be generous to Alpha) , I am now working in V12 and the charts in the UX (what Dialog is called) is coming along nicely.
I am building an app in V12 that is 99% charts.

In V11 you may want to look at Chart feature pack in Dialog (http://news.alphasoftware.com/v11pre...ogChartControl), I think they were a bit richer that the Alt View charts. But to be honest Charting in V11 is very weak. Also don't hold your breath they will not get any better in V11 as all dev effort is now on V12. And as an aside in V12 Grids are going the same way of the dinosaurs. It is all UX baby! Grids are now a bit player.

For a project we developed in V11, we ended up using Fusion Charts where we needed rich charting and eventually realized Charting in V11 was taking a back seat to other features. Steve Workings is the Guru when it comes to Fusion Charts, he has some tools to help you along the way http://www.alphadevnet.com/store.a5w

I am a recovering Access developer and the native charting (MSGRAPH) sucks as well (though better than charting in V11).

I know Alpha can be frustrating with some of the half baked features. What you learn is to wait for them to mature a bit if you don't want to be in work around mode all the time.
My outlook is that Alpha releases stuff too soon, too often... But It beats the pants off M$ that I have been waiting for years for M$ to fix some really basic bugs and lack of features in Access and I am still waiting...

        Hang in there.

          Re: Customising chart on grid

          Thanks Bruce, that's really useful!

I chose Grids because, as a newbie, I couldn't produce what I wanted using dialogs. I know dialogs (or UX's on v12) are the way to go. What I needed was pretty basic: a bar chart (with numbers on top/bottom of the charts, filtered by user. The different bars are week values for that user.

          My 'dialog issues' were:

-I can't find where numbers on the chart are set up. Is it by programming, a CSS, XBasic?
-I don't get how you 'filter' a dialog if your available session var is not a primary key. Being the process: Design dialog control > Bind to table/query > Events (server-side) -OnDialogInitialize

whe you are asked for the variable that contains the primary key, if that is not a primary key, what do you do? Say you've got a table with values:

          ID|user|week |valuechart
          1 |user1| 1 | 10
          2 |user1| 2 | 13
          3 | user2 | 1 | 7

and you know that user 1 is logged in (session var). You can't use 'user1' as session var on the event action script (it gets 2 records, it's no primary key) and you don't know beforehand the value of ID, which is an autonumber.....

Any insight appreciated, I know I may be asking for too much. Thanks, a.
