Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    dirty fields

I have a grid with three computed fields. When the value is computed the field stays clean and hence won't save when submitted. Is there a way to make computed fields go dirty when they are computed?

Lee, when are these fields computed and are you making any other fields in the grid dirty?

      Re: dirty fields

Thanks Keith for responding. I figured out a work around. My problem started when I tried to to use a checkbox grid to get some inventory data. I could figure no way to get the information on the grid for each checked row. The only data I could get to was for the currently selected row.

Is there a way to read the data from each checked row of an editable grid?

I tried everything I could think of and it's probably something simple that just escaped me.

After you read it what are you going to do with it?

          Re: dirty fields

I have fields in the grid that are used to update cost, price, and quantity of items purchased. I compute initial values based on reorder Quantity, Cost and Price so that if noting has changed the user can just check the checkbox in the row to indicate the purchase. This minimizes keystrokes unless something has changed since the last purchase. I then want to use this info to update inventories and prices.

I originally thought I could just cycle the checked rows and to update the inventory but I could not find any way to read these values row by row. The only data available was for the current row and I could find no way to select another row programmatically making it the currently row.

I've found a work around that clumsy and cumbersome and I'd like to use something elegant like most of alpha five's solutions.

              Re: dirty fields

The technique in the link is something I'm familiar with, but my problem now is that the data I need is in the grid not the database. I tried submitting the grid first but the computed fields won't save because they considered clean by A5.

Is there a reason you can't compute the fields behind the scenes on the submit?

                  Re: dirty fields

What I'm doing is setting the value of the update field to -1 when the record is created. After the grid is submitted i check to see if the value is still -1. if so then the field was never saved so I can recompute it after the submit. I was just looking for a cleaner method. I'm a master of workarounds that almost work so this is the third attempt at a solution to a simple problem of just being able to see the data in all the grid rows without submitting.
