Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Alpha Crashing at introducing new objects in dialog

Can someone please explain to me why Alpha keeps crashing every so-and-so-time when I introduce a new object in a Dialog?
It seems that especially when I add a button within a container the dialog is vulnerable.
In the end, I get a message that Alpha has stopped working and on OK it collapses.
This has been happening over several versions of Alpha so it is not just a matter of another patch.
It seems it is a weakness of the Dialog II Component. It has happened 3 times only this morning already and as such is quite annoying.
Of course I compacted my database but this does not seem to have any effect on the occurrence of this problem.

    Can anyone confirm this?

I have added buttons, removed buttons, moved buttons, show/hidden buttons in dialogs and never had this problem (so it will probably happen today!)

Is there anything unusual about the button you are trying to add?

No, it is just plain selected from the "other controls" objects bar at the right of the component.
I believe in my case this is related to the place where you want to include the object. If you add the button below anything else on the component, the problem does not appear. As soon as you do it somewhere else, inside some container, the problem may arise from time to time and Alpha stops. Then button selected is blank and can not even be changed before the problem appears.

Ooooh. Yes. I had this happen to me for a while with a particular dialog. Every time I tried to add a generic button, alpha crashed. I got around it with a copy-paste of another button and then editing it. I never thought to send the problem in, though. :(

Thanks for the response. I experienced, that introducing the object "static text" inside an existing frame also causes A5 to crash. It can be avoided by adding the object completely last, and then after adding move it up again to where you wanted it to be. This all doesn't sound good to me. Obviously, this is a bug.

            Marcel,

Seems like you discovered a bug & found a way to reproduce it. I'm sure if you report it Selwyn will have a fix for you in no time!

Marcel, I too experienced a crash yesterday while adding an Image control to a dialog inside a container. After restarting the developer it seemed to work okay.
I just tried it again with the same dialog, adding and removing buttons & image controls, but I can't make it crash again. It's a bit unsettling.

Aaaaaaah. If you insert the control in a frame object it craps out. If you insert it at the top-level "tree" (eg, outside any container, such as at the end) then it doesn't crash.

That's consistent with my findings as well Sarah.
