Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to use rich text format field and print it on a report?

Hi. I am new to A5 and I can't make this RTF to work. I am trying to use a rich text format field on a report and I am having a problem. The field I am printing is from MS-SQL db with nvarchar(max) type. In A5, when I use Rich Text from the Toolbox, the tags are also showing on the report. I do not want the tags to show/print so I tried the HTML from the Toolbox. If I use HTML and insert the field in it, tags dont show and it seems to work right. However, I cannot control the font size. If I make a word to have a font size bigger, the entire field value will not print.

RTF Toolbox prints this including the tags:
    <p>This <strong>template</strong> <u>contains</u> the Introduction page.</p>

HTML Toolbox prints this (works fine not printing tags):
This template contains the Introduction page.

HTML Toolbox prints nothing if I changed the value of the field to have a bigger font size. So

RTF Toolbox prints this including the tags:
    <p>This <strong>template</strong> <u>contains</u> the <font size=4>Introduction</font> page.</p>

    HTML Toolbox prints nothing.

How do I make this work right so that users can control the font size? Should I use RTF or HTML in the Toolbox selection when creating the report?

    Thank you.

You are putting html tags in the RTF field.

Instead of html tags, use the TEXT TOOLBOX to format in RTF.

It appears when you double click in the RTF field.

The HTML editor lets you change the size of the font also...

Re: How to use rich text format field and print it on a report?

Thanks for immediate response, Al. Sorry I'm not understanding your suggestion to use the Text toolbox. I tried it but how can I put the field inside a text toolbox? Say I have a field called MyRTFfield. I could not find a way to insert it inside the Text toolbox so I manually typed it in with curly brackets {MyRTFfield} and it did not work (I got what I typed in).

Yes, the HTML editor will let me change the font size for static text. However, in my case, if the font size tag is part of the field value, it won't print the value at all. My backend is a MS-SQL db 2008. If I use Access db, this works fine. I believe I also tried this in dbf database and also worked fine.

Am I not defining my field correctly in MS-SQL table? My A5 data entry form accepts RTF format fine. When I save it to MS-SQL table and query the table, I can see the tags as part of the value of the field (plain text). In Access table, I see nice and pretty format (WYSIWYG) and don't see the tags.

      Thank you.

I use the dragdrop list to drag and drop fields to an RTF. Something similar is an option with the HTML object.

or you can use the text toolbox insert to add an expression (including a single field) to the RTF.

Check the docs about using RTF. LOTS of options.

I do use dragdrop list to insert fields to an RTF toolbox. But if I understand correctly your suggestion on your first post (ie. use Text Toolbox), I don't know how to insert a field in a Text toolbox. It seems like Text toolbox can only accept plain static text.

I've read and checked docs already about RTF in A5 unless I missed reading one that specifically discussed MS-SQL table or issue about font size with MS-SQL backend, please give me the link. I'm probably missing a setup in the MS-SQL field properties or something in A5 field properties (hope it's not a bug). Does anyone out there has encountered similar problem or know why this is happening?

          Thanks.
