Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How can I create Session vars from data sent by Ajax Callback in Javascript event?

    I have an OnRowSelect event which contains the following Ajax Callback:

    {grid.Object}.ajaxCallback('G',rn,'make_nu_session_vars' ,'','td1=' + tdate1 + '&tac1=' + mytact1 )

    tdate1 and mytact1 have valid data stored to them, verified by temporarily displaying value in ALERT function.

    My Xbasic function 'make_nu_session_vars' is formed correctly, at least it will send back a javascript alert msg (no problem).

    My problem is I want to store 'td1' and 'tac1' to Session vars in my 'make_nu_session_vars' Xbasic function.

    Can't quite figure that out. Please help. Your assistance will be most appreciated.

    Those variables are passed as request variables. In your xbasic function, there should be an e.datasubmitted, or an e.rv, you can do something like

    Code:
    if eval_valid("e.rv.td1") .and. eval_valid("e.rv.tac1") then
         session.td1=e.rv.td1
         session.tac1=e.rv.tac1
    else
          make_nu_session_vars="alert('Invalid Request');"
    end if
    If those are not available do this

    Code:
    if eval_valid("Request.Variables.td1") .and. eval_valid("Request.Variables.tac1") then
         session.td1=Request.Variables.td1
         session.tac1=Request.Variables.tac1
    else
          make_nu_session_vars="alert('Invalid Request');"
    end if
    Also, I would just suggest you give meaningfull names to your functions, so instead of make_nu_session_vars, rename it to something like 'SetSessionDateFilter' or whatever your doing
    or 'SetSessionTDTact' it makes maintaining your code a lot easier...just a tip.

    good luck!

      Scott,

      Thanks so much for your contribution. Your second code submission was the one that worked for me. I hope to use it in the future when needed. Got me thinking though... Since Alpha gives us {grid.Object}.getSessionVariable(variableName); one would hope they had a similar function for SETTING a Session Var from Javascript- How about : {grid.Object}.setSessionVariable(variableName);

      Upon second thought, maybe that would be dangerous.

        Your welcome.

        I never use the getSessionVariable(variablename) function - didnt even know it existed. I do know.

        WHat getSessionVariable/setSessionVariable is doing, is an ajax callback to a generic script that does exactly what your ajax callback is currently doing.
        Just gonna have to continue using that method for now.
        "Upon second thought, maybe that would be dangerous" - quite possibly yes, depending on what your session variables do. But ya a generic function may be a bad idea. However,
        if you think about that, then anyone who knows alpha and XSS (cross site scripting) or other javascript injection techniques can probe your session vars using
        the gridobject.getSessionVariable(X), gridobject.getSessionVariable(price) etc etc

        Stuff to think about I suppose.
        Gluck!
