Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Grid tricks for renaming database fields and controls....

Re: Grid tricks for renaming database fields and controls....

    Hi Sarah,
Thanks for the suggestions. I would really like to see an option to rename a field in grid detail view since it is really a painful to make many changes.

Not that I have to rename fields all the time, but sometimes I have table structure that are almost the same, and using the "Duplicate" grid option is very useful, but at the end, I would have to re-define all the properties for each field which it is time consuming.

You could try "hacking" your SELECT statements. EG, you rename your FNAME and LNAME fields to FIRST_NAME and LAST_NAME in a table. Your original select:

    Code:
    SELECT FNAME, LNAME FROM person
    Your new select:
    Code:
SELECT FIRST_NAME AS FNAME, LAST_NAME AS LNAME FROM person
I believe the grid will update the fields appropriately. You will still need to go through all the fields, though, and makes sure they're working properly. I've noticed that sometimes when I make an update to a table & update the respective grid, it loses its linkage to other grids/dialogs. Building against a view instead of the tables directly would, potentially, avoid this issue since you could update the view and not have to mess with the grids at all since you could employ the same SELECT AS in the view rather than the SQL Builder.

Given that you are changing the table structure, however, and Alpha's tight coupling of data to display, trying to shortcut the update process is just asking for all sorts of trouble.

  • Grid tricks for renaming database fields and controls....

    Hi All,

Sometimes we need to change one or more field names in the database and then update an already made grid with the new names. What I am doing now is the following:
    1. Refresh the grid connection to get the new fields.
    2. New fields are added to the list in the detail grid view and then I have to select the new ones and remove the old ones.
    3. At this point, any property I have customized in the old fields are lost, specially lookups, etc.

Is there a way or trick to hack the grid and simply rename the old fields with the expected new fields?

    Thanks!!!
