Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to make dropdown box has default value

    when i run the grid, the default value is blank. What i want is the default value is the first one in the list shows there, and do the filter search.

        I've used initial value before with dropdowns in search and had success. Is 'Expenditure Accounts' the value? Try copy-pasting it from your query results for the dropdown choices instead of typing it in manually. Maybe there's an extra space or something in there?

              Re: How to make dropdown box has default value

              I've had a problem with dropdown initial values when the dropdown stores a different value than the value displayed - e.g., it displays the text value for a table entry but stores the numerical index. The problem is I'm not sure which value to put for initial value - the text value or the numerical value. Neither one really seems to work - if I put the text as the initial value, it shows a zero ('0') on the dropdown, and if I put in the index, it shows the index as a text value in the dropdown.

              Any ideas?

              Thanks,

              Bruce

                If your dropdown displays one value but stores a different value, you have to use the stored value. So, in the case of...

                apple|1
                orange|2
                banana|3
                If I wanted my default value to be banana, I would put 3 in the Initial Value box.

                  That works for a static list, but I'm getting my list from a table, and I'm afraid that when I put 3 in as the default, it actually makes a new entry into the table with a new ID and a value of '3' and makes that the default. So, I just get a '3' as the default value on a new record..

                    This works the same for any method of populating the list. I've used all 3 methods - static, dynamic, and variable - with the displayed and stored value being different and set Initial Values for all 3 and *only* encounter problems when my initial value is NOT in my list of choices. Initial value always maps to stored value. If you're getting new entries in your list, it means the initial value you've chosen is not one of the choices for your dropdown. Double-check your choices and make sure the default you want is actually in the list. And then double check that your initial value matches the one in your list *exactly* - extra spaces and all.

                      Thanks, you're right, my table started with an ID of 178, and I was entering 2. Sorry for the inconvenience!

                            i did this in my quick search dd
                            code --> client-side events --> canQuickSearch

                            var qs_value = $(' (Grid.ComponentName.QUICKSEARCH').value:
                            if ( qs_value =='') {
                            alert('You must selest a value');
                            return false:
                            }

                            not ideal but fixed my issue

                              i am not using quick search. it's real search. so should i use CanSearchSubmit event? also, the syntax, if my grid component name is "xxx", should i use (Grid.xxx.CanSearchSubmit)? Thank you very much!!
