Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Displaying an image file reference field on a report

I am trying to display an image reference field on a report.

The image field is called photolink. The images are in [PathAlias.ADB_Path]\Images\.

When I drag and drop the photolink field onto the report, and preview it, it doesn't show up.

When I create a calculated field:
    where_is_it_looking = filename_decode(photolink)

I see that alpha five is looking in [PathAlias.ADB_Path] and not in [PathAlias.ADB_Path]\Images, which makes sense because I didn't tell it anywhere that it needs to look in the \Images subfolder.

    Ho do I do that?

I have tried to create another calculated field that has the correct full image path like this:

    Photolink_with_path = filename_decode("[PathAlias.ADB_Path]") + chr(92) + "Images" + chr(92) + photolink

but, of course, the report then just displays this as text.

The images, by the way, display without any problems in various grid components I created. In the grid component I can set the image folder path. Why can't I set it here? Am I missing something?

Thanks a lot for any help!

Re: Displaying an image file reference field on a report

After pulling out all of my hair, here is how I resolved displaying image file reference fields in my reports. There may be other - better - ways. I am not privy to such methods:

    1. Insert a "bitmap" image in your report (they're in the toolbox - Report) and set the image's filename dynamically to the path to your image. You can use a calculated field if you want, or you can just put filename_decode(FIELD_THAT_IS_IMAGE_PATH,"[ALIAS_DIR_TO_IMAGE]") directly into the dynamic setting for the bitmap. filename_decode(photolink) should suffice - if you included "[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\Images\" in photolink's value.

    2. Add an alias in your settings for Alpha Five to define your alias so when you preview your report INSIDE Alpha 5, the alias you provided will resolve appropriately. You can add aliases under Web Projects Control Panel > View (the menu) > Settings > System > Aliases. It drove me utterly bonkers for several months that my reports never displayed the images unless I published them localhost - at which point the system then knew that [MyImages] resolved to something like C:/www/images/myimages. I added a definition for [MyImages] in my System settings an voila! It was a bittersweet victory.

For the record, I don't use [PathAlias.ADB_Path] very often, if ever, so you may get things working with just part 1. I have never gotten an image file reference field to just drag-n-drop work without having to add bitmap images.

Re: Displaying an image file reference field on a report

Hi Sarah: I tried it but where do you put the calculated field that contains the full path? If I go into the bitmap properties I can set the image from a file. Is that where you put it. I tried using a calculated field in there and it didn't work.

I actually got a different solution to work before you posted your message (I will describe it further down), but your way might be better since the bitmap tool provides different options for sizing the image.

What I got to work is the HTML solution that is posted elsewhere on the message board and that can also be found here:
      http://wiki.alphasoftware.com/Report...d+Fields+V10.5

I mainly had some syntax problems with this, because among other things I had spaces in some of the folder names that needed to be in the path. So here is the syntax:

      Maybe this will help someone...

        Here's a screenshot:
        bitmapFilename.png

If you expand Bitmap > Filename, "Dynamic" will appear under Filename. You can use the expression builder and functions like filename_decode to dynamically set the bitmap's image path.

Hmm... I only get this one, even though I am running the last V11 build:
          a5post.jpg
I'll see if I can find out why that is...

It's the properties window. Is the properties window open in your report design thing? Right-click on your DragDrop List or Toolbox and select "Properties". It's a dockable window. It's not the same thing as F12.

Thanks, Sarah, now that's embarrassing, I didn't know about the dockable properties window. I only ever used the one you get when you right-click on a control. That one seems to have fewer options.
Thanks again for you help with this!
