Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    get dialog control value before dialog submit

    hello

    I was watching the video D14 in version 11 and it shows adding static text to a freeform div. yes that is nifty.
    but is it possible to add dynamically the value of one of the control from the dialog?
    for example a dialog contains
    a name field and the value is Gandhi
    how to I access that field value to display in the freeform div as Dear Gandhi?
    (afterValidate event contains the e.dataSubmited.name, but I want to access before a submit button is pressed)
    thanks for reading

    Hey, haven't check the video, but you could always use javascript to set the value of the div. An easy way is using the SetValue command, or for a generic div maybe the $svs command - for example: $svs('mydiv','Set the text in the div');
    You then need to decide when to trigger the javascript - OnRenderComplete is a common place to do it.

        I haven't watched the video you are referring to, but if your goal is the get the value in a field and you are coding in xbasic the value will be found in e.datasubmitted.FIELDNAME . If you are coding this in javascript you can use {dialog.object}.getValue('FIELDNAME')

          I know
          I did mention in my first post I can get to e.dataSubmitted.LASTNAME I xbasic. but that is when the data is submitted.
          I want to get the value without submitting. to add to the static HTML in the freeform container using one of the value in the dialog.
          I see something like DLG1.V.R1 and $gvs('{dialog.componentname}.V.R1.LASTNAME');
          they are seem to be javascript. I am looking for xbasic version.
          may be dynamic html content may not be possible in the freeform container.
          thanks for your help.

            When are you trying to do this? After you change a value? On initialize?

              Re: get dialog control value before dialog submit

              let's say I have three fields: name, field2, field3 and a button.
              all these are filled and then I press the button( I am not submitting the data entered to a table) I just want to display the freeform container with the name and some message.
              the message I can do easily.(like, we are closed for holidays!)
              a static name I can do easily.( like, dear valued customer)
              a calculated field I can do easily.(like, a x b)
              but I do not know how to display the name in the field name from the dialog. (like if the field contains "Gandhi" I like to display in the freeform are dear Gandhi and some other text)
              looks like these are javascript stuff and the freeform container is html.
              I may be able to slide javascript into the freeform container, not xbasic.

                Ah! I can totally help you now.

                You can do this with either xbasic or javascript.

                In your freeform container, include a <span id="name"></span> where you want the name to appear as well as <span> (or <div>; note: a <div> will create line breaks, if you don't want extra line breaks, use a <span>.):

                Dear <span id="name"></span>,<br/>
                <br/>
                We are closed for Christmas!<br/>
                <br/>
                Sincerely, Shipping Co Unlimited
                You can then set the value of the span using $svs in the onClick event for the button. Remeber: javascript is case sensitive. So it's important that you match the id you gave your <span> or <div> exactly in the $svs function.

                JavaScript is preferred if you do not have to get any data from the server:
                Code:
                //Using either an inline javascript action or "Text Mode"
                var name = {dialog.object}.getValue('NAME');
                $svs('name', name);
                If you wanted to do this in xbasic, then you would need to do it in an ajaxCallback. Add an ajaxCallback to your onClick event for the button. Set the function name, create the function definition, and then write your code. You will probably need to return javascript to set the value(s) in your freeform layout:

                Code:
                'I named my ajaxCallback function "setName"
                function setName as c (e as p)

                	'Get the name
                	dim name as c = e.dataSubmitted.NAME

                	'Return javascript to set the name:
                	setName = "$svs('name','" + js_escape(name) + "');"

                end function
                Hope this helps.

                  Re: get dialog control value before dialog submit

                  On a final note. If your controls - Name, Field1, Field2, Field3, etc - are populated on initialize and are not changeable, you can make them Labels, hide them, and place them in a freeform layout rather than using code to insert their values.
