Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Best SQL Server to use

I am considering developing a GIS/GPS web app. I will use A5 for the front end and use SQL server to create the tables, queries, etc. What might be the best SQL server to use, ie., MySQL, SQL Server 2008, SQL Server 2012 Express, PostgreSQL, etc?

Re: Best SQL Server to use

I think that depends on the intended customer. If it is an SaaS application where you host it yourself and sell subscriptions, then it doesn't matter. If you are selling it to big companies, then SQL Server (probably 2008 ) because they probably already have it. If you are selling it to individuals or small groups, then MySQL because it is (typically...see the license) free.

    They all work with Alpha.

Microsoft SQL Server Express is also free, and can run fairly large scenario, given decent hardware.

I have a SQL Express 2008R2 that happily serves 20 desktop clients (Access 2007) and as of this week, about a dozen tablets being rolled out that use Alpha v12 server which is installed on that same computer.

The computer hardware is relatively high end,
SSD RAID 1 array as C drive for the operating system and program files
and D drive is another SSD RAID 1 array for the database files.

Also, have separated the SQL log file onto the non-database drive (i.e. stored the SQL Server database log files on the C drive array) which is good practice, because log file is just sequential write and barely gets any reads.

File size limitation with SQL Server Express is 10GB, and we are at about 2GB now with 12 years of data for this company.

Also another limitation of SQL Server Express, is it can only make use of one CPU core, but so far we are OK with that (it's not maxing out that CPU core from what I've seen in the monitoring).

As of a month ago, the same hardware runs Alpha Server right on the same machine, and all going well so far.

The database system was originally Access, front end and back end, when I took over this system in 2009

I immediately upsized the back end to SQL Server Express, and have been modifying the access front end over the years to make use of SQL Server stored procedures instead of local queries on the client (where performance improvements were needed).

      HOWEVER

If you want to use MySQL it's pretty damn nice also. Just get a good MySQL admin tool like SQLyog or MySQL Workbench or HeidiSQL (my preference) and there are others I haven't tried, like Navicat, and many more.

Microsoft SQL Server Express comes with the Management Console which is pretty good

and one commercial tool I find indispensable is XSQL schema compare for figuring out what I've changed in my SQL Server development version, compared to the live database.

Depending on the extent of the geo-spatial functionality you are planning to utilize, may want to consider PostgreSQL with PostGIS extensions.
