Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Multi-column dropdowns?

    Multi-column dropdowns?

    I recall (maybe it was a dream?) that somewhere in the discussions about AJAX, there was a mention of multicolumn dorpdowns in Version 9. This would allow, for example, dropdowns to be sorted in some way other than alphabetical, which would be a big help. I believe it also mentioned that some of these columns could be hidden, which is even better.

    Was it all just a dream, or does this feature exist? I can't find anything about it.

    Pat,

    No, it is not a dream. I recall the same thing. I believe though that it is only possible at this point in time via AJAX. I have been looking at that and cannot figure it out. Ifanyone knows how to implement this I would be dancing in the street! :)

      Re: Multi-column dropdowns?

      well this can be accomplished by using the value="<%a5 ? somevalue %>" withing the dropdown tags.

      'somevalue' can be a string that was previously obtained using xbasic and it contains values from multiple columns separated by spaces.

      Just make sure that after submitting the form you only take the first value within the string which is typically the key for the field.
      I hope it makes sense.

      Here is some code in a page to make it understand better:
      Code:
      <html>
      <head>
      <meta name="generator" content="Alpha Five HTML Editor Version 9 Build 1479-3182">
      <title>MultiColunms</title>
      </head>
      <body>
      <p>Choose One</p>
      <form action="dropdown.a5w" method="get">
      <select name="customer">
      <option>1 Marcos Lopez</option>
      <option>2 Maria Doe</option>
      <option>3 June Lira</option>
      </select>
      <input type="submit" name="frmdrop" value="Show"></input>
      </form>
      <%a5
      if eval_valid("frmdrop")then
          ? "You Chose customer with Id:"+ word(customer,1)
      end if
      %>
      </body></html>

        Re: Multi-column dropdowns?

        I also just found this in the help:

        Displaying Multiple Fields in a Drop Down List

        Displaying multiple fields in a drop down list is a challenge because browsers automatically compress multiple white-space characters down to a single character. Thus, it is difficult to format columns.

        This example uses the underscore character "_" to guarantee that fields and columns are aligned. This example is based on the Invoice_Items table of the AlphaSports sample database.

        Creating the Drop Down List

        1.

        Create a grid based on the Invoice_Items table of the AlphaSports sample database.
        2.

        Display the Grid > Fields menu.
        3.

        Move the "Invoice_Number" field to the Selected Fields list.
        4.

        Select the "Invoice_Number" field in the Selected Fields list.
        1.

        Set its Display Settings > Control type property to "DropDownBox".
        2.

        Set its DropDownBox Properties > Height property to 10.
        3.

        Set its DropDownBox Properties > In-line style property to "font-family:Courier New; ".
        4.

        Set its DropDownBox Properties > Not in list rule property to "Do Nothing".
        5.

        Set its Column Properties > Column heading property to "Select Invoice Item".
        6.

        Set its Column Properties > Heading in-line style property to "font-family: Courier New; text-align: left;".
        5.

        Click in the DropDownBox Properties > Choices property to display the Define Choices dialog box.
        1.

        Set the Define Choices > List Type property to "Dynamic".
        2.

        Set the Data Source > Data source type property to "DBF-Table".
        3.

        Set the Data Source > Table name property to "invoice_items".
        4.

        Click in the Data Source > Display value field/expression property to display the Expression Builder.
        5.

        Enter the following expression and click OK.

        Invoice_Number+" "+alltrim(Product_Id) + " " + padl(str(Price,250,2,"$("),10,"_") + " " + padl(alltrim(str(quantity,10)),10,"_") + " " + padl(str(Extension,250,2,"$("),10,"_")

        6.

        Display the Grid > Properties menu.
        7.

        Set the Layout Options > Rows of data property to 1.
        8.

        Set the Customization > Total records message position property to ""No Message.
        9.

        Click in the Freeform Edit Regions > Above grid property to display the HTML Editor.
        10.

        Switch to the Source tab and enter the following text into the body of the page.

        <font face="Courier New"><strong>&nbsp;ID&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; PID&nbsp;

        &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Price&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Quantity</strong><font

        face=Tahoma>&nbsp;</font><strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;Extension</strong></font>

        11.

        Click Save in the HTML Editor and Save in the Grid Builder.
        12.

        Click Browser to preview your work. It should look something like the following. [Picture]

          Hi Mario,

          I appreciate you posting some actual code to illustrate. I put that code in an a5w page, in the source tab of course, but it will not run without the dropdown.a5w page. Could you provide that page? Or provide ehat needs to be on that page?

          Thanks!

            The code I posted is the dropdown.a5w page!
            Create a new a5w page and then copy the code I posted, then save the a5w page as 'dropdown.a5w'

            Publish locally and view page.
