Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Combine Grid & Dialog

The ability to view & update records (Grid component) plus custom fields and code writing of a Dialog - is it possible to put them together on a page and acting as one? Of course, I need only one common Submit button.

    Re: Combine Grid & Dialog

    The answer is yes.

Amazingly, Version 9 of Alpha serves up some very busy pages pretty quickly.

I have a page that contains two grids, two dialogs, a photo upload and a third party html editor all at the same time. To make it all work together, I use links in the grid that set session variables and call the same page, and for the dialogs, the session variables are set and then response.redirected back to itself. For dropdowns, I use variables that can be created off the session variables. The variables also allow me to display the dropdown in an order other than alphabetical, and set up advanced buttons to move the lines up and down.

If you assume that Alpha can do it, you can create some spectacular pages.

Please, could you explain it? I need 2 things: ability to execute code after submitting Grid and a "special" field (control) in Grid, that should be populated. Is it possible to manage only by using Grid component?

Pat I have been looking to do some thing similar. Is there a way to get some sample of that page.

I have a web page that I am desperate and I can not complete.

        I will appreciate.

          Mike,

I mentioned a lot of stuff so that the range of possibilities could be seen, but what in particular do have a problem with?

Pat (or anyone else that might be able to help),

I'm very new to Alpha and would appreciate any advice I can get. I'm not looking for someone to do this for me but to tell me what strategy would work the best, so I don't waste a lot of time going down a dead end.

I have a few options and I would like to know if any, or all, of them are possible and would appreciate a couple of hints to get going in the right direction. I already know how to set up query filters, loop through and send the emails; I just need help with passing the variables between controls.

Option 1: (I already have the grid set up, this would be my first choice)
I have a grid component with a search part that can filter up to nine fields and display the results in the grid. I would like to include a dialog component with a submit button. I would then pass the filtered records to the dialog, loop through the records and send an email to each person/record.

Option 2: (This option seems like it might be the easiest)
I could set up a dialog with the nine fields, create a filter string (or 9 variables) and pass the variable(s) to a grid to display the filtered records. I could then pass the same info to another dialog with a submit button to loop through and send the emails.

Option 3: (Not sure this one would work)
I could try to do the whole thing in a single dialog but I'm not sure that I can show a grid in a dialog, i.e. showing the first 20 records with the navigational controls on the bottom.

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

            Tom

I have pretty much figured this one out. I used the BeforeSearch event to capture my variables and pass them to my dialog.

Everything worked perfectly EXCEPT I can't pass the date range values from the control to the variables. I'm using...

              Code:
              session.Inquire_Start_S = SearchDataSubmitted.Inquire_date:search_start
              session.Inquire_End_S = SearchDataSubmitted.Inquire_date:search_end
... and I'm getting the error:

              "Script Error
              Error:command: session.Inquire_Start_S = SearchDataSubmitted.Inquire_date:search_start
              Property not found
              SearchDataSubmitted.Inquire_date:search_start subelement not found."

I grabbed the "Inquire_date:search_start" syntax from the freeform layout. I have searched the help files and forum for the proper syntax (someone else had the same wuestion last year and it went unresolved) without any luck. Is there a solution for this or do I have to set the search up in a dialog and pass the info to a grid?

                Re: Combine Grid & Dialog

In case anyone was wondering, Option 1 was probably the easiest but I couldn't get around the date range issue. I ended up going with Option 2 and once I got the string as a filter syntax figured out (with all of the quoted quotes), it was smooth sailing. If anyone needs any help or has questions, let me know.
