Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    FTP doesn't work

I have signed up with Zebrahost, who has set me all up to publish my version9 standard files to his server. Clive and I have gone over all the settings in my profile and when I publish and he has checked his server. All seem correct, but when the a5w page opens in the browser, I get error 3 - it cannot find the data files.

    Re: FTP doesn't work

    Simple stuff first:

Did you publish the data files?

Can Clive, you or others use your FTP account (maybe, with FileZilla or something) to see your data files?

Are you sure your path_alias.adb_path points to the correct location?

We published all the files. The files were published, located on the server in the correct folders. Yet the .a5w page could not "see" the data files.

You need to be able to answer Steve's question "Are you sure your path_alias.adb_path points to the correct location?" Open up one of the A5W pages on the server in Notepad. You can open a .A5WCMP also, but they are harder to search.

Look for physical path information pointing to a database file, see what you find. It will either be pointing to the wrong direction (but then at least you will know where) or (in the A5W page) it will look unchanged like [PathAlias_BBB.Path]\ because you spelled the alias wrong in code, or you did not actually use an alias where you should.

You might also go to View > Settings > Preferences > Web Publishing > Alias Resolution and change it to Publish Time, and then replublish.

This is the aw5 page, located at C:\a5v9\a5Webroot, which should be looking for the file in the folder c:\a5v9\data. I don't see any direction in here. What am I missing?

              Hi,

I am having the same sort of issues and followed the advice in these posts.
However, I am still challenged :(

I have set the preference as indicated above
              I have set the [PathAlias.ADB_Path] = C:\TranData
I'm not sure what I am supposed to put in the Publish Database Files/Folder prompt in the profile. if I put nothing I get an error that it is empty, If I put the same path in I get
Error 3 - Error loading C:\TranData\staff.dbf: The system cannot find the file specified. \TranData\staff.dbf
Because you are not allowed to use a drive letter

Please - what the hell am I doing wrong

I can see the data files being created off the root of the web server

                Re: FTP doesn't work

The Alias tells Alpha were the data is at runtime, when a component or dialog is being submitted. If your dbf files are sitting in C:\TranData, then that is what the Alias should be. That path is relative to the server where the files will be published, so "C:\TranData" needs to be valid from the server's file system.

The Database Files/Folder settings tell Alpha were to publish files. The values are NOT directly related to the Alias at all; they are relative to the FTP (FTP Address property) or LAN (Webroot property).

Speaking only to your question about data, if your FTP or LAN property points to c:\TranData, then your Folder for data would be blank. If your FTP or LAN property points to c:\, then your folder would be TranData.

                  Thanks again Steve,

It was the end of a 14 hour day and, as you can tell, I was ready to throw the PC out the window. I appreciate your quick responses.

                  Regards,

                  Brian.

                    Re: FTP doesn't work

                    OK It works,

I did the following and am not sure if this is what I should do each time.

Set the FTP Setting to TranData
Database files were published to c:\A5Webroot\TranData as I expected they would be.
Moved the Database files to c:\TranData which is the setting I have for the Alias.
                    All worked great.

I was under the assumption that I could get the data to be published to the C:\TranData location automatically on publish, this was incorrect?

                    Regards,

                    Brian.

                      Re: FTP doesn't work

The honest truth is that FTP fails quite a bit to publish the database when asked. I've documented this and several other problems with FTP and turned it in as a bug.

Run through it again, be sure to check the Publish Datafiles, and check the Edit list to ensure your tables are selected.
