Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    querying a table to set session variable

    Hello,
    Im trying to set two session variables from a dialog component thats dropdown lists Clients by first and last name and stores the ID value. So far, so good. With the Id value, I have successfully created a protected session variable. Id like to create session variables vclntFname & vclntLname to display the Client names on other pages. The Users table has the fields ID, Fname, and Lname.
    After Validate code:
    dim session.__protected__vuserref as C
    dim session.vclntFname as C
    dim session.vclntLname as C
    dim tbl as P
    dim qry as P

    session.__protected__vuserref = CurrentForm.Controls.Clients.value

    tbl = table.open("[pathalias.adb_path]\users")
    query.order = ""
    query.filter = "Id =" + quote(session.__protected__vuserref)
    qry = tbl.query_create()
    tbl.fetch_find()
    session.vclntLname = alltrim(tbl.lname)
    session.vclntFname = alltrim(tbl.fname)
    tbl.close()
    Response.Redirect("Client.a5w")

    On the Client List page, after choosing a client and submitting, the protected session variable will display, but I get the following warning:
    The number of arguments or the type of one or more arguments do not match any existing function.
    While testing in the code editor I substituted the actual Id value 00000000 for the (session__protected__vuserref) a client named User One.
    When trying:
    ? alltrim(tbl.fname)
    = User
    ? alltrim(tbl.lname)
    = One
    ? session.vclntfname
    =
    ? session.vclntLname
    =
    Can anyone see what Im doing wrong? Or is there an easier way to pull the fname and lname from the dialog dropdown list based on the selected client?

    Thanks,
    Bob

    Re: querying a table to set session variable

    This works for me. I pass the info as page variables via the url, but the session.variables should also be available.

    <%A5
    if eval_valid("session.filteruserid")
    dim qry as P
    dim filteruserid as c
    dim session.ulink as c
    dim session.employee_name as c
    dim session.employee_number as c
    dim session.employee_dept as c
    dim session.employee_status as c
    dim session.employee_email as c
    dim session.group as c
    dim session.can_do_risk as l
    dim session.can_do_timecard as l
    dim session.can_do_form201 as l
    dim session.can_okay_time as l
    dim session.can_request_equip as l
    filteruserid = session.filteruserid
    tbl = table.open("employees")
    query.filter = "ulink = filteruserid"
    qry = tbl.query_create()
    session.ulink = tbl.ulink
    session.employee_name = tbl.Employee_name
    session.employee_number = tbl.Employee_number
    session.employee_dept = tbl.Employee_dept
    session.employee_status = tbl.Employee_status
    session.employee_email = tbl.Employee_email
    session.group = tbl.Group
    session.can_do_risk = tbl.Can_do_risk
    session.can_do_timecard = tbl.Can_do_time_card
    session.can_do_form201 = tbl.Can_do_form201
    session.can_okay_time = tbl.Can_okay_time
    session.can_request_equip = tbl.Can_request_equip
    response.redirect("menu.a5w?CanDoTime="+session.can_do_timecard+"&CanDoRisk="+session.can_do_risk+"&CanDoForm201="+session.can_do_form201+"&CanDoRisk="+session.can_do_risk+"&CanRequestEquip="+session.can_request_equip)
    end if

      Re: querying a table to set session variable

      Tommy,

      Thanks for responding. I ended up using a lookupc() instead of the query. It seems to work. I'm still trying to learn the difference.

      Bob

      dim session.__protected__vuserref as C
      dim session.vclntFname as C
      dim session.vclntLname as C

      session.__protected__vuserref = CurrentForm.Controls.Clients.value
      session.vclntFname = alltrim(lookupc("F",alltrim(session.__protected__vuserref),"Fname","[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\users","Id"))
      session.vclntLname = alltrim(lookupc("F",alltrim(session.__protected__vuserref),"Lname","[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\users","Id"))

      Response.Redirect("Client.a5w")

        Bob,

        I think your trouble was the line

        tbl.fetch_find()

        you might read the help on that function.

          Re: querying a table to set session variable

          Bob,

          tbl = table.open("[pathalias.adb_path]\users")
          query.order = ""
          query.filter = "Id =" + quote(session.__protected__vuserref)
          qry = tbl.query_create()
          tbl.fetch_find() <-- remove this line *****
          session.vclntLname = alltrim(tbl.lname)
          session.vclntFname = alltrim(tbl.fname)
          tbl.close()
          Response.Redirect("Client.a5w")

          I would remove the tbl.fetch_find() line - your query already finds record that matches quote(session.__protected__vuserref)

            Gary and Pat,

            Thank you for the advice. What you mentioned makes sense now about the record already being found. I removed the tbl.fetch_find() and it works as expected.
