Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    running database operations from web

I have figured out how to submit data from a grid, but how do I then get the database operations, such as updating a field, to run? Specifically, I have a check box which, when checked, causes a "Done_today" calculated field to change to today's date. I submit the data, and the calculated gets added correctly to the data file. Once that has been done, I want to check box to revert to blank (false). If I were working on the desktop, I would activate a script which would clear that field, but from the web I don't know what to do.

    Hi Conrad,

Put Alpha code onto a separate page that is code only.

Have that page activated from the validate event. The user wont see anything as there would be nothing on the page to be seen.

Thanks, Keith. That gives me a glimmer of understanding. Do I create this new page in the A5W portion of the web projects part of Alpha? I know how to use the wizards to create an operation in the desk-top version. How due I convert this into code on this page I am to make?

You said you were using a Grid to submit data, so Keiths suggestion is not applicable as there is no Validate Event. But I'm confused; what check box are you speaking about, where is it, is it a field in the table or a calculated field, etc. It might help if you posted an image of your grid and more detail. I can't figure out what exactly is being asked.

Re: running database operations from web

I'm not sure the specifics of the field matter - it is just an example of the general question - how to I run database operations on the data on the server?
As to the check box, when it is "true" (on the desk top application), another, calculated field, is filled in with today's date. That, in turn, drops the record off the browse of things to do today. Tomorrow, when I open the browse again, the check fields are all updated to "false", then the filter is applied, and things not done on tomorrow's date will be displayed.
When I submit this from the web, the field calculation, to set the date, goes OK, but I don't know how to reset the check box field the next day when I open the grid.
