Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Exporting to SQL-Database: Missing relationships between tables

I am currently evaluating the Alpha5 Trial version (Platinum, V9, Build 2053) for use with our SQL database and web environment. First of all, congratulations on your software, which is by far the most user-friendly I have found!

After testing the environment, I have come across a problem though: When I export the A5-Tables via the AlphaDAO Export Genie to a SQL-Database, the tables incl. contents appear correctly, but the relations are missing

Question: Did I go wrong here or is this a known issue? The local help of Alpha Five ("Export Database Tables to SQL Dialog") suggests a different interface for exporting, but I havn't come across this one, so I can't say if this corrects the problem ...

    Thanx,
    Uwe

How are you defining these relationships? In sets? A set definition is a more "temporary" arrangement, more like a view for specific use in an SQL database, it does not as far as I'm aware form any "permanent" bonds between tables.

What is the brand of SQL database your refer to? relationships usualy are defined by the foreign key relationships between tables. So an entry of a key in one table refers to a key in another table. These should have come across with no problem. Then you can define "VIEWS" which are logical tables based on physical tables. Usualy these combine the foreign keys together with their respective attributes (fields) into one virtual table.. You may have defined these as the relationships in your question. Please clarify.

Re: Exporting to SQL-Database: Missing relationships between tables

Thanx for your replies, I will try to clarify the issue here ...

The original Database resides in a Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition with Advanced Services (Version 9.00.3077).

In Alpha Five I import the tables via the "New Table" -> "Active-Link Table" option, with the "Create multiple Active-link tables" option. Here I select the "Views" and "Linked Tables" checkboxes.

The "Create Active-link tables"-Window shows the successful import and mentions no errors.

Now, I try to export these A5 active-link tables to the same MSSQL Server again (into an empty Database) for test purposes via "File" -> "Export Data". Background: In future the copy of the DB should be exported to another MSSQL-Server on a different system ...

So far, so good. Theoretically the complete Database should now be in the MSSQL-Server again, right? Unfortunately, only the tables without the relations beween them appear, and all the tables allow null values for each column :(

So I had a deeper look into the problem: While exporting, Alpha Five creates only a default CREATE TABLE statement. The question seems to be, how can I get A5 to create the correct SQL statements? Do I have to script each table

        Any help greatly appreciated!
        Thanx,
        Uwe

I still do not undersand why you use Alpha to import and export to a similar database.. If the only think you want to do, is export a DB (schema) to another, you should use the export and import functions from your database. Table and field contraints will be imported then with it.
