Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Session protected questions

Ok, so I have read everything I could on this and still cannot figure it out. What I'm trying to do is to filter the records that are display, so that a user sees only the records that belongs to them. Say the user log on ID is fred, well I only want him to see the records that he has entered in the past. How can I do this? I have looked at the coding but of course it does not tell you where to put it or what part goes where. Help !!!! :-)

    Thank you

        Re: Session protected questions

Thanks guys but when I try it I must be missing something because it just does not pass the userid on to the web page. Also the filter does not filter, I'm all missed up. So you are saying if I follow those screen shots and do nothing else it should work?

          Re: Session protected questions

Not quite. What is missing from the screeshots (plus my comments below) are that the value in "session.__protected__userid", which is used to create the argument :userid, is NOT necessarily the value the user types in to the Login dialog when they log in. So if your records are identified by that login value (fred in your example), then your filter will not work - unless you take measures to ensure "fred" is in that security field.

If all you want to do is filter records by the value they type in to the Login dialog, you can ignore the first screenshot. Place this code on the Login.A5W page (or whatever page has your login dialog). It places the value the user types in to the Login dialog into session.__protected__userid. Then the screeshot that shows the Argument can be used as shown to provide the filter.

Note that although this works, it is not the best way to filter records. The session could expire while they are still logged in. Then the session variable will be missing and not properly filter.

          Code:
          <%a5
          if eval_valid("submitbutton")
          	if eval_valid("userid")
          		dim session.__protected__userid as c
          		session.__protected__userid = userid
          	end if
          end if
          %>
Place it at the very top of the page, above any HTML tags.

My comments on the screenshot, and the entire post referenced, is that it contains some incorrect advice. You can ignore my comments as they don't help you with your issue.

          1) the first screenshot shows the "External User Identifier field" as named session.__protected__userid. This is a mistake because the value in that variable will NOT be the UserID, it will be the "Ulink" from Security Framework and not necessarily contain the value the person entered at login, the UserID.

          2) Eric suggests a login_redirect.a5w that the user will pass through on login, and sets variables. This is a mistake because the user will BYPASS this page if they bookmark or otherwise go to a secure page, which sends them back to Login, and back to the secure page after login.

              Re: Session protected questions

It's the most confusing part of build a secure web app. Its actually not that complex, but since everyone approaches it differently, using different terms and with different levels of understanding, it's confusing. I do have a Template for purchase at my website that provides a complete framework for all or most of this.

At my website, under Products. It's much more comprehensive than what you need for the filtering task, so may be priced high relative to that particular need.
