Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Images in Preview (Web) vanished!

    Hello,

Seems all of a sudden, the images in the "preview" tab (the one that updates after saving a grid) does not display any of the graphics that used to show up.

Seems also just recently, that any graphics I add to the project, when Publishing, come up with an error... However if I just click OK it continues publishing the rest of the project, and the pages come up properly displaying the graphics on the localhost.

Not sure what is going on, as this is out of the blue. I don't think I've changed anything in the project to cause this!?

I know I'm using a mixed bag of graphics. i.e. jpg, gif, and png... does this matter to the preview, will it choke on more than one image type being used?

    Thanks,
    Bill

Seems that the A5W page does this in preview... the same component seems to be the only one effected with not showing it's graphics (programmatically added) in the preview. Seems all others show ok in component preview... anyone ever seen this?

    Thanks,
    Bill

Re: Images in Preview (Web) vanished!

      Hi Bill,

I'm not sure why things should suddenly change but you are not seeing your images because alpha can't find them in the temporary directory it uses for preview. If you right click one of the missing images in preview you should be able to look at properties and see where alpha is looking - it is usually the standard windows temp location e.g C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Local\Temp.

You can change the temp directory Alpha uses under View>Settings>System>Directories

or you can simply copy the graphics files into the directory specified when you right click on the image placeholder e.g. C:\Users\MikeW\AppData\Local\Temp

Re: Images in Preview (Web) vanished!

Mike, your answer may be correct for a desktop app, but this is a question about Web, and the images are never copied to the system 'temp' folder.

Rather, they are copied to the LivePreview folder, normally under c:\a5webroot\LivePreview or perhaps a subfolder named images. If you do right-click the red-x icon in your preview, you will see where Alpha expects to see them.

Imagess are NOT normally published to LivePreview when you save or publish your components, or at least the process is unclear because I find it never happens. Use Windows to copy-paste that image to the proper folder.

Re: Images in Preview (Web) vanished!

OK, more evidence for those that are interested in this obvious bug.

I've been playing with inserting graphics programmatically in a grid using the "custom" control. Everything was working fine, and the web-component preview tab was functioning (updating) after each change+save to the webcomponent.

All of a sudden (and it has happened again, on a second component), the graphics have dissapeared off the preview.

This is most definitely limited in scope to the web-component, as I can open another web-component and it displays properly.

Seems that as soon as this happens, the A5W page (which the component lives on) when opened in the WYSIWYG editor looks like the above (blank boxes). Also, it seems to coincide with this error, seems that the graphics files (that I create, then copy into the folder, then ADD to project (or copy to project by ADDING through the web-projects control panel), have an error when I attempt to PUBLISH them, both to LOCAL and to REMOTE.

I know this error (screenshot attached) is coming, when I save the component, and ALL the graphics (jpg, png, gif) in the preview DISSAPEAR. When that happens, I know the publish project (all modified files) will choke on the graphics files. Clicking on "OK", the rest of the project gets published... I then have to manually 'publish' this file (individually) for it to get onto either local or remote servers.

I've also confirmed the files are not read-only, or hidden.

          Any ideas?
          Should I post the component?

Re: Images in Preview (Web) vanished!

My first thought is never store Alpha projects in the My Documents folder. Put them in some simple folder structure like c:\A5\myproject. I have no idea if that will help, but there have been issues with Vista and the MyDocs folder. Also unlikely, but the MyDocs folder on LANS might actually be redirected to your server. The actual path to your My Documents folder is complex, going through Documents and Settings to your login account folder. It's just cleaner to use something like c:\a5\myproject.

              Ok, good suggestion...

Am I safe to just close Alpha5 and move the project directory to a new location, then restart Alpha5 and open the project file from the new location?
I'd hate to mess things up permanently, at this stage...

              Thanks!

Yes, you can just move it, retaining the folder structure within the project.

                  Steve,

Man... you a batting 2 for 2 'bizzarrities' I've had... incredible!...

That was it!!! (so far so good!) :D

Moved the project, and opened up the same components that were previously me33ed up, and bingo... no issue.

                  Thanks again for your knack!...
