Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Move the PK to the FK

I don't know where I'm suppose to post this so sorry if this isn't the place.

The web app I'm building has a single record on it like the single customer record from the examples. But in mine I have a need to make another form for farm sites. How I have this built in Access is the new form's default is set to the parent but I don't think that would work here so how would I pass the PK to the FK in a new form?

    Thanks

Whos'e PK are we talking about? The logged in user? a specifically selected customer? I think you are saying, you are creating a Farm record and need to include in that record a value indicating who the Customer is, correct?

Re: Move the PK to the FK

Typically, you create a Link from the Grid to the new page/grid with the PK in the URL. It would look like this mypage.a5w?id=123xyz. Create a field with type Link in the Grid, select to create the link from other fields in the grid, choose to add a Variable to your link....

I don't think that would work for me. This is only one of many that i'll be making. I was thinking you could use a nav menu but that didn't work. Is there anyway to create fields without having them in your database?

Re: Move the PK to the FK

You really need to go into some detail of what you want to accomplish. No one knows what "create fields without having them in your database" means out of context. On the message board, it is better if you detail what you want to accomplish rather than ask minute questions about if this or that will or won't work. Developers in general think in the abstract and can visualize your situation, and propose Alpha-specific solutions from that vantage point. Screenshots work well too.

Re: Move the PK to the FK

The Main Contact Page is where I will put alot of links to add and edit customer records. As you will see at the bottom of the picture I've started adding tabbed grid links.

The grid_farmNew is the form I want to open and I want the PK to insert itself in the FK on this form.

All PK and FK are hidden but they are there.

I have added notes to the pictures too.

Now i'm new with this program, but what I did in Access is the create a button with this code:

              DoCmd.OpenForm "grid_farmNew",,, "CustomerID=" & me.CustomerID

I really hope something similar is available here.

              Thank you for your help,

Re: Move the PK to the FK

It's as I proposed earlier. You need a LINK from the active Customer record that opens the AddFarm grid/dialog with the PK in the URL. You either have to have pre-populated a session variable with the value, or carry it in the URL to get it to the new page (or an HTTP POST, etc.). This is a web environment. The newFarm form has NO knowledge of the parent record. You can't do it from the Menu because the menu has no knowledge of the customer record. If this were an Alpha Desktop application, you could do what you did in Access, but its the web.

Getting back to "create fields without having them in your database". I know what you mean now. In the web, those are called session variables. So, you could say "session.customerid=123" somewhere in your code. Then on the newFarm dialog, use that session value to populate the FK. But you have to get that value in to the session variable first. Its easier to do what I suggested and create a link (you can create a button also, using Custom Fields, but that syntax is more difficult).
