Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Tough nut to crack ... argument for grid fails

    Hi all,

perhaps someone has a useful hint regarding a nerving little problem I am facing:

(Background: Need to get a list of all our patients, who have their birthdays in a particular month)

Now I pass the argument (the month) into a grid via a dropdownbox, and when I test the web control via Live Preview, it works just fine. When I upload it, though, and test it as part of an A5W-Page, I keep getting "No records in query" replies :(

Since it is a session variable, I also tried to restart the server, reloading all the pages, etc. ... same result. Then I changed the query from "Table or View-Based" to an SQL-Select Statement ... same result

Interestingly enough: When I replace the argument with a number (ie. between 1 and 12) the grid works fine on the A5W-Page ... so the problem clearly seems to be the argument ... any idea on how to fix/ avoid this problem?

    Thanx,
    Uwe

You are connecting to a MSSQL table. So is the table on the server, and is the connection string the same as on the server as it is on your local host?

You need to know what is the value of the session variable at that moment. Put ?session.myvar on yiour A5W screen so you can see the value at runtime. Most likely, it is null or misformed. Note - the MONTH() function returns a numeric, and your session var will be character. So you may need to convert it to numeric to work (but then it shouldn't work local, so that's probably not an issue).

        Hi Dan, Hi Steve,

        thanks for your replies

@Dan: The Alpha5-IDE, the MSSQL-Server and the A5-Server are on the same machine ... thus, the error doesn't seem to be a problem with the connection string :(

@Steve: As you yourself mentioned, I also believe that the problem lies in the argument. Since I'm a newbie to A5, how do I go about viewing the session variable when it runs? :o

Alternatively, is there a similar method to get the grid working?

        Thanks again,
        Uwe

The fact that you have no records in the query just makes me wonder about the table. If you create a grid based on the table without any filtering or queries, do you get records to display? If you do, then yes the connection string and table are fine. So then yep, you will need to work on the argument.

We can see the argument filter you wrote. Can you show us the variable under the define argument button?

Are you using the Windows login on MS SQL? If yes then that causes problems as the web server won't necessarily run as the same user but as "System" instead.

Also, go to your profile and explicitly set or copy the connection string from the local version, as for some reason it does not automatically copy this otherwise.
