Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Need help with Adding...

I started a subproject for a summer camp and here is the problem I am facing... Any help would be great.

    My Data Structure is following:

    Main table
    Record_ID Name Total_Store_account
    9001 Andrew (numeric field)
    9002 Tom (numeric Field)

Account (One to many - set to Main Table linked with Record_ID)
    Record_ID Name Store_account
    9001 Andrew 9
    9001 Andrew 10
    9002 Tom 6
    9001 Andrew 9
    9002 Tom 10
    so on....

So now I want a function that will add the data from Account table Store_Account and put it in Main table Total_Store_Account. I tried to use tabelsum, dbsum and total it does not work. As far as I know I cannot use total() in the field rule. Note that: since the data in Account table is not fixed I would like to have some function that will automatically add the data based on Record Id.

    Thanks for the help.

Calculated fields don't actually update when records included in the expression are updated. They update only when the parent record is modified, and the record saved. If you update a record from the web, any calculated field will recalculate their value. So tablesum, etc will work with that in mind.

Strictly speaking in terms of normalization, you would never include a field in the parent, that was a summation of values in child records. You would express this value in a report as a "report-level" calculated field where the summation values were generated when the report was run. It's really a problem, for instance:

    - if you had a calculated field in your parent using tablesum(), and the values in the child records changed, NONE of the parent records would reflect those changes UNTIL the parent records were individually altered (made dirty) and saved. And if you ran a report based on the parent table that included that calculated field, even the report would NOT show the updated values for those calculated fields.

Well there are ways to approach this. Basically if you are going to add records to the child table, each time a record is added you would run a posting operation to add the new value to the parent table. So if record 9002 Tom added 10 again, the 10 would be added to 9002 Tom (in the parent via a Posting Operation) and Tom's new total would then be 26.

        monatin,
You have the same question in the desktop forum....please indicate what area of Alpha you are dealing with as the answers may not be the same and it can/does get confusing for us when trying to help when there are duplicate threads.
