Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Using a dataset in a grid

I created a dataset comprising two tables and the dataset is working OK

I then tried to use the dataset to create a grid but could not see how to do this.

Assuming this can be done are there any tutorials I can see?

    Many thanks

I assume that you are referring to a set? If so, look at the grid linker which allows yo to create a "set".

Re: Using a dataset in a grid

"Dataset" isn't a common term in Alpha Five. Are you referring to two tables that you tied together in a relational way? This, in A5, is called a "Set".

      If I'm right:

If the set is a one-to-one link, you'll need to construct a "View" as the data source for your grid.

If the set is a one-to-many link, you can't use it as a data source for a grid. Instead, you would need to construct a grid for each table, then use the Gridlinker Web Component.

A little guessing going on here in my attempt to answer you, so if this doesn't make sense, come back and try again?

Re: Using a dataset in a grid

        Thanks for the answers.
Yes I have created a Set
        There are two tables
        Supplier and Country
In Supplier there is a field CountryID
In Country there is CountryID and CountryName
In the Set I have the CountryID and CountryName showing OK

I wanted to use the Set in a Grid showing the suppliers fields and the CountryName field.

Re: Using a dataset in a grid

You cannot use a set in a web grid.

But you can create a MAPPED table from the 2 tables you mentioned and then select the fields you want to show. This mapped table can then be used in a grid.

A mapped table you can use in a grid.

The other option is to use a view (this you can create at the grid definition).

For 1 to many you can use the (tabbed) grid linker.

Yet another is when using a SQL database, to create the view in the SQL DB. You can use a SQL view in a grid directly.

Re: Using a dataset in a grid

I have discovered the page at
            http://support.alphasoftware.com/alp...View_Query.htm
Very comprehensive so am getting on the right path I think.

I cant seem to find a way of moving the fields in the detail view apart from their order.
If I wanted two fields to display on the same line, is that possible please?
            Thanks

Under Row properties of the field you want to display first, you will find FREEFORM layout. With this option you can position other fields next to each other.

                Thanks for the freeform.
I selected Freeform but I cannot see the detail view in preview.
I was hoping I could drag fields and labels to where they are required?
