Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Grid Details drop down box

I have a grid with a mapped table comprising two tables.
    Suppliers
    Country

In a grid based on the mapped table I have a dropdown box which shows the CountryID (in Details)
When I select from the drop down arrow the fields all show as double.
    EG
Field in the database is 3.
In the drop down box this shows as 33

I must have done something wrong but cant see what.
    Any ideas please?
    Many thanks
    John

Re: Grid Details drop down box

I thought perhaps I could simplify getting the correct country in the supplier table.

The field I have in the Supplier table country is now a character field

The table Country has a field CountryName char 30

In a grid Detail for Supplier I have Country as a dropdown box

    This gets populated in Choices
    Datasource DFB-Table
    Table name Country
    Display value field/expression Country_Name
Stored Value Country_name shows as "Albania" (first in list)

When I select the dropdown I can see all of the countries and a selection can be made.
However when I save and look at the dropdown Country shows 0 (zero)
Can anyone see where I am going wrong please?

Usually the stored value should be the keyfield of the table you are creating a dropdown for. If this does not help, then I suggest you:

Copy the component (with the dropdown in it) and preferably also the two tables out of you project folder to a separate folder, (zip them) and send them as an attachment to this forum.

This way you probably get more feedback.

      regards, Ron

        Thanks Ron
I think I have made a little progress as you may see by the attached images.
In Choices when I selected CountryID the value which showed was the Country_id number "2"
I typed Country_Id into the field and as you may see in choices result the right name is appearing in the detail view Country_ID

I wonder if its possible to get the name showing in the Grid above the detail view?

Re: Grid Details drop down box

If you defined a mapped table and you selected the country name (from the country table) as a field there... Then you can select that field to display in the grid above the detail view.

Of course the linking field for the mapped table would be the country id in both tables.

What I sometimes also do is define a dropdown (dynamic to the country table) displaying the country name... Of course this will eat some performance because it has to perform the dropdown lookup for each row in the grid, but this method saves you from defining a VIEW / Mapped table if it is just for one field..

Dropdowns are intended for input fields of course, but it also works for display only fields, like the grid part of a grid with detailview.

          See PIC for example.

I will have another try with a mapped table.
As with most things once you manage to get an item into the head, next time you can build on that, but at this stage the help given is invaluable.
            Thanks again
