How do I declare a session variable on a a5w web page? I have a page with grid. I want to select a record and open web page containing a dialog. The recors in the dialog must be filtered with the selected record in the grid in the first page.

On your grid, create a Calculated Field and then add that field to your grid as a Link field type. Make it Computed from fields in the Grid, and look something like this: mypage.a5w?id={id}, swapping out for your field names and appropriate parameters.

On the target A5W page, add this xbasic to the very top of the page:

if eval_valid("id")
session.id = id
end if

That ensures your parameter named id is permenently stored in a session variable for re-use.

In your Dialog, in whatever code you use to filter or extract data from a table, you can use the session.id as the argument that matches the Grid row you just came from.

Note, you don't absolutely have to convert ID to session.ID, but it is safer than using ID alone. ID is a 'page variable' and only exists as long as the parameter is in the URL. If they refresh the page, the parameter may disappear from the URL, and the ID variable will no longer exist. So converting it to a session variable helps ensure the value is around when you need it on the page.

The 'calculation' is very simple. On the Query tab of the grid, click Calculated Fields. Enter something like:

mylink = "Open Record"

The word Open Record will be the name on the link, so change that to fit how you want the link to read.

On the grid, just add that mylink field to your grid, it works either in the Grid row or in Detail, which ever you are using.

On the Link field, select Value in Field for the Display what..? setting. And then, Compute from fields... in the Link Address Type, and then continue from my previous post.
