Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Xbasic END or STOP

    Curiosity asks, is there any real difference between these two ?
    END || STOP

    From the help
    END
    The END statement stops script execution; closes all files, indexes, and tables opened by the script;

    STOP
    suspends the execution of a script.

    Any guide to usage ?

    Re: Xbasic END or STOP

    Colin,

    My guess would be that END does all the good stuff that you just described - STOP just stops the running of the script without doing all the other good stuff.

    By the way, in your other thread on this topic, are you saying that you have found that by using the END statement, you have solved the memory "clutter" (i.e., RAM usage quickly increasing over time) issue? Is this the preferred method over tbl.close() and ndx.drop()?

      Re: Xbasic END or STOP

      Gary,
      What I don't know?
      When, My ISP migrated from one system to another the memory problem just got worse. I don't know why? Is it the new SANS system? is it Windows2008?
      Is it the A5server? was it my code?. I just don't know.
      But please look at the attachment to see what Monday was like for my server.
      In respect to restarts.

      I'm not promising the fountain of youth, Dr Gary, I'm stating that my ver9 WAS has drunk from the waters and has been rejuvinated.
      -
      The END I am only using on AJAX Code,
      Maybe it will have an effect on other code
      -
      I would actually to be double sure
      finish like

      xyQry.Drop()
      xyTbl.Close()
      END
      end if
      -

      Although the documentation suggests you don't need to.
      But I think it look prettier. :-)

      remember that when you put in an END, zero more code will be executed,
      only labeled code and functions.

      Good luck !

        Re: Xbasic END or STOP

        In XBasic,

        END works in Scripts and Functions
        EXIT FUNCTION works in Functions
        STOP Seems to be the same as END, but documentation does not indicate that it closes tables and the like.

        They all generate different operands, so they can be different, although I don't see much. In general, I use END in scripts, whereas I use EXIT FUNCTION in functions (per Selwyn telling me that it was the preferred over END). I have never used STOP, and only a few Alpha functions ever use it, and most of the time, right after an error.

        Just a piece of the puzzle.

          I use EXIT FUNCTION in functions (per Selwyn telling me that it was the preferred over END).
          I didn't know that one, I was sure all the examples used END

          STOP maybe a legacy type command,
          I remember it being a necessity in a assembler BASIC , 30+ yrs ago,
          I'm sure in that version there were no end or exit though
