Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    500 Internal Server Error

I Just bought Alpha 9 Client and Server application which I am trying to use to build a simple web contact list. I followed Alpha's simple instruction but I am still having errors. Below is the problems that I am facing:

    1) I built simple grid list component (contact_list.a5wcmp)
    2) Next, I created a navigation web component (nav_main.a5wcmp)
    3) Next, I created a new a5w page and saved it as an index.a5w
    4) Next, I inserted my navigation component (nav_main.a5wcmp) in my index.a5w page and previewed it with no problems or errors
    5) Next, I inserted my grid list component (contact_list.a5wcmp) and saved it as contactlist.a5w
    6) After Inserting the "contact_list.a5wcmp" component the following appears at the top
    <%A5...%> rel=stylesheet type=text/css href="file:///C:/Program Files/a5v9/css/Corporate/components/a5navsysToolbar/style.css">
    7) When I preview the contactlist.a5w page I get the follow error

    500 Internal Server Error
    "Script Error
    Error:Script: /LivePreview/$$5A.a5w line:46
    ?

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE SHOW ME HOW TO DIAGNOSE THIS PROBLEM. I AM NEW TO ALPHA FIVE.

    THANKS

Could you copy-paste the full A5W source here, or at least the top 50 lines. It would be easier to figure out.

OK, its very clear. There is a problem in Version 9 and earlier with a specific Windows Security Update. When you first go to to Alpha on the News and Updates tab you will see a IMPORTANT message at the bottom. Follow the link to this information to resolve the problem.

Or you can upgrade to V10 which fixes the problem or us Windows Vista or Wiindows 7 which don't have the problem.

          ----------------

HTML Editor Broken After Applying Microsoft Update

If you are running on XP, a recent Microsoft security update has broken the DHTML ActiveX control which is used in the Alpha Five HTML editor.

You should roll back the Microsoft update until Alpha can investigate this further.

The problem will manifest itself when you switch to the Source tab in the Editor. You will see extra characters in the source view that should not be present.

Here is the link to the Microsoft Update: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../MS09-046.mspx

You must roll back KB956844. To do this, go to Windows Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs. Make sure the "Show Updates" check box is checked. Search for KB956844 and uninstall the update.

              I tried removing that update on a 2003 server and no help. I get this error;

                Re: 500 Internal Server Error

                Bill,

The Windows update issue is only a problem on your development machine, not the server where you publish your files (unless they are one in the same).

And your error is not from the the Windows security update problem anyway. When I've seen that error, it normally was fixed by some combination of going back to my component, making some minor change, saving and publishing. Or I had to strip out the component from the A5W page, save, then reinsert, save and publish.

                  Thanks Steve.
I deleted the component and built a new one and it's fine now.
I am developing on the server computer with remote desktop since I need to develop from 2 places and the activation for A5 only includes one computer.

                      Re: 500 Internal Server Error

Being blunt, you have two options:
                      • Upgrade your OS to Vista or Windows7.
                      • Upgrade your Alpha Five to V10.
                      • Petition Alpha Software to patch V9 to remove the problem (if that is even possible).
                      • Petition Microsoft to make changes to KB956844 so it doesn't cause this problem.

The blunt part is that I said you only have two options (at least in the near term).

I am getting the following error:

                        500 Internal Server Error
                        "Script Error

                        x_TabbedGridLinker not found."

I am running development on a Windows 2003 Server, and just recently modified my navigation menu when this error happen. I tried removing the componenets and saving, then re-inserting the components back in and still get error.

When I insert just one componenet, works fine. It's only when I insert my menu component and tabbed grid link compenent that I get this error.

Tried removing the windows update noted in another thread, but I cannot remove the update...windows won't allow it to be removed.

Any suggestions? I've burned a lot of time on this and have other areas of my database to work on...this shouldn't be taking this much time.

                        Thanks!

If you cannot remove the update, I believe you are stuck with the issue.

If you CAN remove the update, try deleting EVERY web component on EVERY page this occurs, save each page, then re-insert the components. This worked for me.

Your other option is to use a different machine for development...
