Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Converting database

I am helping a friend convert his Alpha Five Version One database (I know, I know...it works for him but he is afraid that if something were to happen he will be dead in the water) to Alpha Five Version 9. What is the best way to do this without a lot of hassle? Thank you!!!

    Re: Converting database

The differences between the two are substantial. Scripts and coding that worked in A5v1 won't work in V10. A couple might, but I would expect nothing.

So, the thing to do is build the system that you want in V10, then append the data in from V1 as you need / as you go.

You can simplify this a bit by making a copy of the V1 tables into your new database folder and using them as a base.

You may be sitting here reading this thinking that you don't want to completely re-write the system. As long as you know what you want -- and I'll bet you do -- then getting it done in V10 should go pretty quickly (with caveats, of course, for really big or really complex systems) so don't let that impede you.

      Re: Converting database

Thank you, Steve. I was afraid that would be the case. I have worked with other databases but Alpha Five is new to me. I could figure most of it out. Well, got to get to the drawing board and start working on it. Thank you once again.

        Re: Converting database

We have the Version 8. The database from Version 1 was updated to Version 8. Now we are trying to convert it to Version 9. Do we have to do anything to do that? Copy Data Dictionaries, etc.? to make it work? All modules see to be working except one. Everytime we try to do something in that module we get an error "Record is opened by another user or is in session. Please close before proceeding." No records are opened and nobody else is working on that database because it on a stand-alone system. I have tried everything. Created a new table, imported records from the old table, packed the table...nothing seems to work.

        Any help will be helpful.

          Neil,
Your question got a bit buried. During development, errors like this will happen at times for no apparent reason....if so then normally a restart of Alpha will suffice. There are other times in which, although not easily apparent, you have opened a table without closing it properly....or Alpha choked on something you tried/experimented with and this left a table open. Try to reproduce the situation and then present the information here (much easier said than done many times I realize!).

            Re: Converting database

Thank you, Mike. As I mentioned, the error message I stated is what shows up everytime. It is a stand-alone system and the system has been restarted several times but the error always shows up. All other modules are fine. I am creating a new table and then importing everything form the old table. I want to see if the same error occurs.

              Re: Converting database

As you are working through the joy of developing an application, you need to compact the database (from the CP, File, Database Compact) in addition to packing a table. Keep in mind that 'Pack' and 'Database Compact' are similar, but are different. View the Help file for good explanations of the two processes.

As Steve said, there is no real reason to upgrade to anything other than the current version (V10), unless of course, you already have V9 and the cost of V10 is an issue.

Added thought: After re-reading what you have written, it sounds like you are working on a desktop application, not a web app. If that it true, you should be on the Desktop forum rather than this forum.
