Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

      Re: email marketing from WAS???

Define 'bulk". How many? I would not send more than 25 at a time out of WAS. It is not a bulk email machine. While you are sending those emails, the server will slow down. The browser window you are using will appear locked up for the duration of the send. I'm guessing that will be registered on the CPU as additional load.

Now, you could work it out on the WAS if you read up on how to effectively send bulk email. Its not a technical challenge, but how to follow the ISP rules and not get in trouble. You'd have to program the WAS to follow those rules. And by that time its more cost effective to use a bulk email operation like ConstantContact.

If you don't learn and follow the rules, and you send thousands of emails from your own domain a couple things will eventually happen. You will get blacklisted as a spammer, your ISP will cancel your account. Almost all of your email with addresses like AOL, Hotmail, Yahoo will be 100% blocked (because those entities watch for duplicate email and then block the email for all accounts.) Most of your email won't even get through because

Here is a clip from one ISP's policy page on bulk email:

Sometimes our customers want to advertise their services by sending bulk email. Yes, it can be done, if it is done correctly. When we receive a spam complaints on your domain, it's clear it was not done correctly, and your domain will be terminated from service. Here are some frequent responses (arguments) that we get from our customers, which may be helpful to you.

      Q. Im not doing anything illegal. I even have an opt out function, or an unsubscribe link in the email.
      A. It doesnt matter. Its not illegal to run a blacklist site, and its not illegal for an ISP to subscribe to their Spam filtering services. We still will be blacklisted.

Actually, its a prtty good list, here is the website: https://help.maximumasp.com/KB/a191/...-web-site.aspx

Steve's comments are right on. However I will tell you this.
I maintain a site for retreat group on my server. And we do bulk email from it to the members using WAS.
We have been doing this for over a year now. A couple of notes though.
The email run is typically about 1500 names. I have a restriction on the email process that will only 10 runs per month and no more than 2 in one day. Emails without an attachment are sent individually, that is, only 1 email address recipient per email. If there is an attachment, then it will batch names so that it sends to 5 recipients in one email.

This is working quite well for us and we no complaints from my ISP, nor do we get "aol" type blocks.

Prior to that we used an email service from authsmtp.com. They gave us good service and the pricing was in line for us.

            hi mike,

thanks for responding, i have been sending similiar numbers out through our own server using netmailer with no problems from our isp etc.

i am hosting this new webiste on oneandone (who also happens to be our isp) not our own server and i was worried that sending out such numbers might cause an issue using this method.

i think i will give it a go. any chance you could point me in the direction of how to set up bulk emailing from the WAS.

            TIA

Here is a handy reference to the larger ISP's and their email policy.

is this a dig at someone helping me??? A5 WAS is not easy, the help files are not very good and there isn't enough posts on the board with info.

alpha 5 is for non programmers, im a non programmer. without help how do we progress, what would be the point in buying alpha 5 if we couldn't be productive.

The Web part of alpha 5 is so difficult and there seems to be only a handful of people who have any real experience/skills.

i have 2 posts currently, which should be fairly easy to resolve, but im not getting any real answers to solve the problems.

I would gladly share anything i have managed to achieve which someone else may consider useful.

is this a dig at someone helping me???
Richard - of course not, that thought would never cross my mind. I had spoken with Mike recently, met him for the first time about two weeks ago, so it was a very friendly comment, if somewhat between he and I. I was suggesting I personally could use a retreat, and I assumed most of us would love the same thing. NOTHING other than that.

I think I speak for everyone when I say I enjoy helping on the message board, and at the same time am often at a loss on how to provide complete answers to complex questions. "Alpha is for non-programmers" is one of those statements where it depends on what you are trying to accomplish. Selwyn said it well in a recent video "Alpha is for developers who don't want to write code unless they really have to". But at some point, if your application has unique characteristics, you need to write code. And that can become difficult quickly if you don't do it every day.

So be sure, I'm ready to assist without reservation or putting anyone down.

On number two: rename your Email control to Userid and then add this to the after validate at the top:

                            uservalue.email = currentform.controls.userid.value
