Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Filter Dialog Drop Down choices on session variable

I have 2 grids and 1 dialog on an a5w page. When a user logs in, the grids are filtered with an argument which is filled by a session variable. That part works.

Thanks to Gary's help, the dialog also works, but I'm having 2 problems.

    1. I need to filter the choices from a drop down on the same session variable that is created when users log in.

    2. There are 4 additional controls in the dialog, all drop down, with this problem - I've created a short expression for what is displayed. This seems to make it impossible to leave the control blank - there is no blank value at the top of the drop down list, and when the user clicks submit, the value that corresponds with the unintentionally selected choice is submitted.

If I keep it simple and display the contents of a field, this problem doesn't happen - there IS a blank choice at the top of the drop down list.

    I'd appreciate any help.

    Thank you.

    Rob,

I am not sure I exactly understand what problem you are having.

To filter a drop down on a session variable is very easy - you can do that within the dialog itself - is that what you need help with?

And to make the drop down have a blank at the top, you can do that also in several ways - again, is that what you want?

      Gary,

      Yes to both, thank you.

I did see how to filter a drop down with a variable, but using the the session variable created upon log in produced very unusual results. But I'm open to any suggestion.

And, yes, I would like blanks at the tops of the other drop downs, as you described.

      Thank you.

Re: Filter Dialog Drop Down choices on session variable

        Rob,

Let's assume you have a user and the session variabole is session.user, and the field in the table is also user

In the "choices" for the dropdown, go to the filter and type:

        user=?

As soon as you type the ?, another tab appears at the bottom called "parameter mapping". Click on that and select "variable" in the mapping dropdown. Then in the variable name box that will then appear, type:

        user

That will filter your dropdown by session.user

Now, to get a blank at the top of the dropdown, go to Additional choices (pre) and put a | symbol in the choices and that's all.

        That will do it.

          Worked perfectly. Thanks Dr.

Newbies (like me) keep in mind that the field name from the table comes first. The session variable goes inside. Keep in mind after you are done and hit ok...it is still going to say "user=?"
          Thanks,
