Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Adding Titles, Description and Keywords

    I am at the point of publishing my first effort at website construction. I thought I would leave the Titles and Keywords until last. Problem is, I don't really know much about HTML and when I add in the <title> then go to WYSIWIG, all my HTML vanishes! I can't find any instructions in the help file on where to place these items.

    Can you please let me know what I am doing wrong?

    Kind regards

    Larry Gordon

    Re: Adding Titles, Description and Keywords

    Oops! Please cancel my query re where to put <title>. I have now found the statement was already there on line 390 and I was trying to add it again at the top of the page - which I now know causes all the code to vanish.

    However, any further pointers on the subject of web optimization and Alpha would still be appreciated.

      Larry, the HTML only disappears IF you have that "bug" regarding Windows update KB956844. Normally you can have multiple Title sections in HTML without blowing up the page. There is no problem in V10.

      Edit - I find I have the "KB956844" bug problem in V9 EVEN THOUGH I do not have KB956844 installed. Need to investigate.

      HTML Editor Broken After Applying Microsoft Update

      If you are running on XP, a recent Microsoft security update has broken the DHTML ActiveX control which is used in the Alpha Five HTML editor.

      You should roll back the Microsoft update until Alpha can investigate this further.

      The problem will manifest itself when you switch to the Source tab in the Editor. You will see extra characters in the source view that should not be present.

      Here is the link to the Microsoft Update: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../MS09-046.mspx

      You must roll back KB956844. To do this, go to Windows Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs. Make sure the "Show Updates" check box is checked. Search for KB956844 and uninstall the update.

        Re: Adding Titles, Description and Keywords

        Larry when I make changes in one or the other; Source vs WYSIWIG I save my work before I switch. When I do this I do not loose my work. If I forget to save, I loose the work.

        Steve,
        I've seen posts regarding this Microsoft issue before. I'm not sure if I'm experiencing these "extra characters". Can you give an example of these extra characters? :)

          Many thanks for the help. Steve, I have removed that security update a few weeks ago - when I first started on my website training, so I guess I've got another issue. Thanks for the 'save' tip Eric - I will give it a go. Meanwhile, I am now saving duplicates of each page I'm working on - just in case...

            Has they KB956844 issue been solved for V9 yet?

            Just starting a new project. I did "roll back" but XP gave me the warning that other security updates may not work properly. Not sure I want to proceed with the project now.

              Re: Adding Titles, Description and Keywords

              No, not addressed. I can't even roll KB956844 back on my computer anymore, MS won't let me. But with a little practice, you can work around the problem. As far as I can tell, it only affects A5W pages if they are blank (no HTML) and you go to WYSIWYG. I always start with a Template page and so it rarely affects what I am doing.

              This is what the HTML looks like if you allow that to happen:

              HTML Code:
              <!doctype html public "-//w3c//dtd html 4.0 transitional//en">
              <html><head>
              <meta content="text/html; charset=unicode" http-equiv=Content-type><link rel=stylesheet type=text/css href="a5res:defaultStyle\(default)" media=screen>
              <meta name=GENERATOR content="MSHTML 8.00.6001.18854"></head>
              <body></body></html>
              And you have to edit it back to this (minimal):

              HTML Code:
              <!doctype html public "-//w3c//dtd xhtml 1.0 transitional//en"
              "http://www.w3.org/tr/xhtml1/dtd/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
              <html>
              <head>
              </head>
              <body>
              </body>
              </html>
              After that it should not revert to the messed up html.
