Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Unable to pass variable to webgrid

    Hello All

    I'm having problems passing two date values into a caninsertrecord event in a webgrid. I need to pass a start date and end date into my component in order to get the caninsertrecord event to execute. My start and end dates are entered via text boxes on the a5w page, I have placed them inside and outside the table that houses the component, but when I attempt to insert the record SQL Server is complaining that my date fields are null. The following is the SQL being generated when I submit the insert:

    Row: 1 INSERT INTO dbo.Statistics (Category , Total , CDArea , StartDate , EndDate) VALUES ( :CATEGORY,:TOTAL,:CDAREA,:STARTDATE,:ENDDATE )
    Parameters: 13, 1, 1, / /, / /

    I have declared the start and end dates as globals in different areas within my a5w page but with no luck either

    Can anyone suggest something I can try to ascertain where I am going wrong?

    Cheers

    Jason

    Re: Unable to pass variable to webgrid

    If your start and stop dates are entered in text fields on the page, then those text fields must be in a separate grid, dialog or plain HTML form area. When the grid is fired from the Submit button, NOTHING happens regarding those other values since they are not submitted with the grid.

    You said you tried creatign them as "globals" elsewhere, but there is nothing called a global in a web app (except when dealing with functions. If you create them as session variables and then use those in your caninsert event, that should work.

    What is the code you have in the caninsert event?

      Re: Unable to pass variable to webgrid

      Hi Steve

      Thanks for your reply. I'll try and be as brief as possible but give you the info you need. The code for my text boxes on the webpage is as follows:

      Code:
      <%a5
      dim Statstextbox1 as d
      dim Statstextbox2 as d %>
      <align=LEFT><valign=LEFT><input id="StartDatetxt" name="Statstextbox1" style="WIDTH: 155px; HEIGHT: 22px">&gt;<p>
      <align=LEFT><valign=LEFT><input id="EndDatetxt" name="Statstextbox2" style="WIDTH: 155px; HEIGHT: 22px"
      Courtesy of another thread (http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...ables+web+grid), I then inserted this code before the component loads:

      Code:
      if eval_valid("AddStatistics_Button_Submit") then
          datasubmitted.StartDate = Statstextbox1
      	datasubmitted.EndDate = Statstextbox2
      end if
      Then my caninsertevent code is:

      Code:
      function CanInsertRecord as v (DataSubmitted as P,
      Args as p, PageVariables as p, Result as p)
      with PageVariables
      DataSubmitted.CDArea = 1
      DataSubmitted.StartDate = Statstextbox1
      DataSubmitted.EndDate = Statstextbox2
      Result.Cancel = .f.
      Result.ErrorHTML = ""
      end with
      end function
      Any ideas? I'm doing this because I want to avoid the need to enter the same start and end date for each new record I add via the datagrid, if you can see an easier way, please let me know

      Cheers

      Jason

        Re: Unable to pass variable to webgrid

        Hi Steve

        I found some info on the session variables and have got things working via another one of your threads. Only thing I would like to avoid if possible is having to submit the dates via the dialog submit button and then hitting the submit button on the webgrid to update the SQL dbase? If you dont submit the start and end dates separately, the session variables are empty

        Cheers
