Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Basic CMS design setup

I am after suggestions/guide for starting a basic CMS project.

Trying to get the grips on how to start a project and what is required. Each page has all the same html code except for variables like <a href="javascript:jumpto('xxxxx/xxxxx/xxxx.html')">&nbsp;xxxxx</a><br> etc
No Graphics are involved at this stage till get my head around on how it will work with Aplha. Not interested in any other software just Alpha.

    many thanks

    Re: Basic CMS design setup

I'm looking to do the same thing.

I've been looking at two different options for the CMS:
    1. Joomla
    2. CMS Made Simple (CMSms)

Both have there pros and cons. I've read that CMSms is a little easier to work with, especially when it comes to working with menus. Joomla appears to have more bells and whistles, but at the expense of being a little more difficult to work with.

I am planning on playing around with both, just as soon as I can get a test server running properly.

Originally I had setup XAMPP for my test server. Joomla appeared to work fine (from what I could tell). I couldn't get CMSms to work very well though. I decided to uninstall XAMPP and try another route.

Now I'm trying to get WampServer to work properly, although I am having what I think is a port issue. What I like about WampServer as opposed to XAMPP, is that I will be able to "copy" the setup of the host server where the application will be moved to. For example, my current webhost provider uses Apache 1.3.4.1 and PHP 4.4.8 and MySQL 4.0. WampServer allows you to recreate this very same environment or test other versions if you need to try out a different server.

If I can get WampServer to work, I'm going to play around with CMSms. I really want to move our website (all static data) over to a CMS system, and then start playing around with Alpha to incorporate some dynamic content.

      Re: Basic CMS design setup

Well, I finally figured out how to get CMS Made Simple to work with WampServer. I had downloaded the latest version of WampServer and it came preinstalled with Apache 2.2 and PHP 5.3. CMSms doesn't play well with PHP 5.3. After a little "googling", I added older versions of PHP and Apache to my server setup. Made the necessary changes and now everything is working like a charm. For the record, I'm now using Apache 2.0.58 and PHP 5.2.11.
