Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

File Server can't find A5v9 files over the internet

By clicking "Order Tracking" on our website, it redirects the user to our internal file server that hosts our A5v9 database. Customers are asked to enter their phone number to pull up their order. From there they can track their order status.

Problem is the file server crashed this past Friday which required me to install another hard drive and use the old drive as a slave. I was lucky enough to save all of the data.

But now the "Order Tracking" tab on our website cannot find the data. It gives no error message.
I called my ISP and they've confirmed the correct port (8080) is still open.
I installed Port Checker software and it confirms the port is open and is functioning properly.
I've checked (and rechecked about 50 times) that A5 App server is directed at port 8080 and has c:\webroot as the document root directory.

From what I can recall, everything is set up exactly as it was before the hard drive crash.

I'm at wits' end and not sure what to do next. Any help would be appreciated.

Yours is a problem one must almost need to "scratch and sniff" to work through. Any time there's a crash it's difficult to know what might be the state of all things.

But here's a suggestion: if you have not already enabled each/every logging option in Alpha Five Server, you might try doing so. Reviewing the log files may - just may - offer a hint to point you at the culprit. Alternatively, place some "bogus/crap" file in your c:\webroot (btw: doesn't Alpha default to "a5webroot"?) or appropriate directory that will, upon access, generate an error. Then you might be able to determine whether the directory/file you THINK should be getting accessed really is getting accessed.

Thanks for your reply and you're right, the default is c:\a5webroot and that is where my files are stored. In my haste I just typed it wrong.

If I wasn't logged in anonymously, I would be too embarrassed to tell you what the fix turned out to be.

I was so sure the problem had something to do with the management of the ports I completely overlooked everything else. It turned out when I reinstalled A5 App Server I forgot to reenter the license code and to activate. But to my defense, when you entered the address that should have kicked back the .a5w page I simple got no error message at all....just a blank page.

I blame myself for the oversight but my guess is I'm not the first to do this. Maybe Alpha can include an error message to remind the user that the App Server has not been activated in future releases. But again, the bottom line is it was an oversight on my part.
