Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    WAS on MS Server 2003

I have installed WAS on the C Drive of my MS Server 2003. It is - activated and all ready to go. (i have changed the webroot to the d drive, where the files are located)

I have uploaded the alpha v8 files to my website folder on the D drive together with my html files.

I can access my html files through the browser - but can't access the a5w files.

    Any advice would be appeciated.

    Thanks

    Duncan

    Hi Duncan,

What do you mean by "can't access". Do you mean you mean the files are there, but the browser returns not-found or another error? Do you have Security Framework turned ON at the server? When you say you "uploaded" the Alpha V8 files, do you mean you copied them from one location to the new D location, or did you publish them from Alpha directly to the new location?

Re: WAS on MS Server 2003

      Hi Steve

The files are there but the browser returns not found. I published the files via alpha's internal ftp programme.

When you refer to Security framework - is that on WAS or IIS. When I uploaded the files I did not check any ofthe additional security options that were available as part of v8.

      Thanks

Re: WAS on MS Server 2003

IIS issues: Is the Alpha App Server actually running on the server? Can you see the green server icon in the lower right system tray, and right-click to configure the server. IIS could be taking up the same port that you have assigned to Alpha (port 80).

From your first note, I think the server IS running. So, then it may be how you are trying to open the files. If your document root is d:\a5webroot and all of your A5W and other files are in that directory, then the internal HTTP path to your files is //servername/myalphafile.a5w. The external path (from outside your firewall) will depend on the URL you assigned at your Domain Name Server. That is, if you established a domain www.duncang.com there should be a "DNS" option to point that domain name to your Alpha server.

Note- if the Alpha server IS running AND you have security framework turned off, then trying to access a non-existent A5W page should give you a message from the Alpha server indicating the Build and Release number (with Security turned on it will just relay Forbidden for missing pages).

The WAS is running on the server, green light is on and I have configured the document root to D:/My_Website/TB/.

When I try to open the a5w file on the localhost - I continue to get the message that File not found, although it sits in exactly the same directory as my html files that are.

Does IIS need to be configured to work with WAS as it just seems that WAS is sitting there at the moment doing nothing.

Re: WAS on MS Server 2003

The document root in Alpha should have back slashes. As far as Alpha is concerned, you can unistall and throw away IIS. You should stop all IIS websites at least to test your Alpha application, the ports could be conflicting.

I'd suggest you stop the IIS websites, make sure the Alpha App Server is set to port 80, the document root is D:\My_Website\TB (back slashes and NO trailling slash).

As a test then try to access an A5W file that really does not exist. You should get an Alpha error page with the name of the server.

If this fails, please capture and provide an screenshot of your Alpha App Server config screen and the File not Found page you keep getting.
