Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Extract to excel

    Hi,

I have a table with a status in, when this is changed, I store the status in another table, this allowing me to keep track of status changes, no problems in this. I have now been asked to, from the grid I have showing the status changes, export these data into an excel sheet for the status meetings, and I cannot find anything on how to send data from the Web Application server to Excel, can any of you help me here.

    Simple alternative
on Internet explorer if you right click a grid you'll see an option that says "export to excel", so just make a grid with the fields you want to export ,make them all labels and give the user the option to choose how many record per page he wants to see.
    Cheers

      Re: Extract to excel

I must say I was taken aback when I saw this answer to the Excel export. Of course, I had to try it. Oddly, what shows up in Excel when I do this is not the table (grid) on the screen! What appears is the text of the login page on my site. Is the security layer of A5 preventing the data from being transferred to Excel?

I have been telling my users to save the grid as a plain HTML file and then import that file into Excel. This works, but is a bit cumbersome and has a few "gotchas" in the translation.

I must try this too, I had no idea you could do this!

Try adding xls to the Types of Files always allowed list in the Page Security settings, upload security settings and try again if that is what is stopping it.

I use level security so I think that yes the security framework is preventing this function from executing, maybe it might work if you make this grid in another project without built in security framework activated. (first try the previous suggestion, if that works that would be a much better alternative than this one)
          Cheers

I tried this and it does work if the page in question has no security attached to it ("always allowed"). Since it only extracts information from label fields (not editable text boxes) this may be an option for the original poster?

              Re: Extract to excel

Well he could have a link to a similar grid but with label fields only, it could say "View data in excel frienly format" or something like that and he could add some simple instructions on how to export to excel above the grid. Since this is an old threat I asume that he allready got something figured out.

All you need to do is create an export operation, then view the generated Xbasic and use it to creat an XLS for download. I'm pretty sure there is a thread or two around here that has the details.

                    Re: Extract to excel

Just thought I'd share my results with everybody: Setting XLS file type to always allowed did not work. Setting the A5W page security to always allowed did work. Slick as can be! This will be a real time saver for my users. Thanks to all who provided this information!!!
