Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Can I adapt the XBasic script?

    Can anyone help please? I have built my applications mainly using action scripting together with some XBasic, mainly adapted from simple example codes. I have now reached a log jam! I collate and display data on the web for clients to access and search to find particular individual cases. I now need to enable them to print reports on the individual case displayed but I can't find a Genie in V8 that does this. I have seen the script posted by Clyde (APFCClyde) and from the comments it looks like it should do what I need. The only problem is that I don't know how to adapt it. I need the record for the report to be identified by its reference number (database name "Ourref") I've tried swapping "Ourref" into the script and making other changes but no joy. Any help for this Xbasic-illiterate would be very much appreciated!!

    Thanks

    Re: Can I adapt the XBasic script?

    Good morning Richard. I'll do what I can to help. I'm still new to this myself, but will try to explain how I print a report of the current displayed record.

    I'll assume you have a report that works when run from Alpha dev system.

    First you need a way for the user to access the report. There are many ways to accomplish this, but I used a simple button on the page with the record displayed:

    <form>
    <%a5
    ? "<input type=button value=\"Print Record\" onClick=\"window.open('print_record.A5W');\">"
    %>
    </form>

    When the button is pressed, it displays this a5w page:

    <html>
    <head>
    <meta name="generator" content="Alpha Five HTML Editor">
    <title></title>
    </head>
    <body>
    <p>
    <%A5
    dim Filter as C
    dim order as C
    dim pdfname as C
    dim filename as C
    dim acctno as C = session.vAcctno
    IF eval_valid(acctno) = .f. Then
    goto skipreport
    end if
    Filter = "Accountno = " + s_quote(acctno)
    Order = ""
    pdfname = session.session_folder + chr(92) + "tempreport.pdf"

    filename = report.saveas("print_record@[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\webset.set", "pdf", Filter, order, pdfname, .f.)

    if file.exists(filename)
    response.redirect(session.session_url + "tempreport.pdf?" + time("hms3"))
    end if
    end

    skipreport:
    ?"Error: You must call page with a query string that specifies the Account Number.<br>" + crlf()+\
    "For example: " + request.script_name + "?Account Number=92720000<br>"
    %>
    </p>
    </body>
    </html>

    Since the page contains only Xbasic code, nothing displays but a blank page while the report generates. The keys here are the Filter & table/set name. In my case, the key is Accountno, in yours it might be Reference number. Simply substitute your key field name & session variable. The second part is the table/set name. In my case it's webset.set, in yours it might be Ourref.dbf or Ourref.set depending on how what you're using.

    That's pretty much it. Hope this helps.

      Re: Can I adapt the XBasic script?

      Hi Clyde

      Thanks for coming back to me so fast, you don't know how good it feels to know there is help out there, this one has really been bugging me. I shall go and try a few things now, but in the meantime if you could help with an explanation of 2 other lines of the script I would really appreciate it.

      dim acctno as C = session.vAcctno (where did "acctno" come from?)

      and

      pdfname = session.session_folder + chr(92) + "tempreport.pdf" (what is "+ chr(92)?)

      Thanks again and I hope things are brighter with you than they are with me. I'm in the UK on a cold, wet winter's night!

        Re: Can I adapt the XBasic script?

        Well, it's actually raining here in AZ as well just not really cold (57 degrees).

        I just substituted another variable for the session variable session.vAcctno which is the record key for the record being displayed on the page. It wasn't really necessary, I could have just as easily used:

        Filter = "Accountno = " + s_quote(session.vAcctno)

        This sets the filter for the report to be based on the current Accountno.

        chr(92) is the backslash - it's just a shortcut way instead of using "\\" to define the backslash in the path name for the temporary pdf name.

        If you're interested you can see this example in the help file under:
