Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    carriage returns in email body

the below code needs to be modified. I put this in
Within a grid componant. I have Outlook set up. So the below opens outlook.
Link address type: computed from fields in grid
link address: is tithe below code. But what code do I use to get the crlf(2)
to work? I also tried <br> and <p> but all just are printed.

This script populates the email address, subject line, and body, but the
body I wanted to have carriage returns. It works fine, just doesn't have carriage returns in the body.

    Any ideas. Thanks in advance.

    Code:
    mailto:{Email}?subject={Name_First} {Name_Last} - from My Name&body={Contact_Merge}crlf(2){Name_First}, crlf(2)Thanks, My Name

EricN, thanks, I just tried that, but it just puts that into the string of text in the email body.

This is a link in an a5w componant. When clicked, it opens an Outlook email message window, and populates the areas.

      Is that what your using?

I'm using this in a html page where a hyperlink is displayed..."Contact Employer."

        Not in a grid.

I understand what you are trying to do. Sorry this didn't help.

Ok, I guess, I'm ok with it working 80%. I'm just surprised that there isn't a way to make it work. Thanks.

this was just a short term fix, we have another web emailer, that we can merge formatted text, alpha fields, and footers etc.

If/when you come up with a solution, please post it here. I may have a need for this in the future.

I should imagine that something like URLENCODE(chr(13)+chr(10)) would do the trick?

Since it is a LINK, it needs to be URL encoded to come across right - if you just want to use line breaks in emails send directly from within a script, just use
                Code:
                <<txt%
                dfklsdflsjdf

                sdfsdfsd

                sdfsdfsdf%txt%

EricN - thanks, I am completely revamping the sites with Alpha, have spent almost a year building the backend database. So in 1-2 weeks new site should be all alpha. Just need someone to help me with CSS. Thanks

Re: carriage returns in email body

NoeticCC - I tried that, but it just puts the code in the line of text as text.
                    1. Try to make a little a5wcmp
                    2. Then make a link
                    3. The link will be an email that invokes Outlook
                    4. Make the link populate subject, body with body text having <p> or <br> or crlf(2)

                    Code:
                    mailto:{Email}?subject={Name_First} {Name_Last} - from My Name&body={Contact_Merge}crlf(2){Name_First}, crlf(2)Thanks, My Name
                    661-xxx-xxxxcell
As mentioned the above code will just read the code as text.

Maybe if I have a variable with the value {<br>} or {%0D%0A} maybe that might work.

Re: carriage returns in email body

I know it works because here is an example from four years ago, still works on the latest release. Note that there is no 'mailto' in my string, the first value from the lookup is the TO value by default.

Here is calculated field and I attached the client Outlook window that comes up. The calc field must be added to the Field list and made a link with static text such as "send email".

                        HTML Code:
                        alltrim(lookupc("F",Customer,"Email","[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\customers","Customer_I"))+"&subject=RE: ATS Job: "+alltrim(Job_No)+"&[email protected]"+"&body= %0D%0A%0D%0A%0D%0A --------------------------------%0D%0AJob: "+alltrim(Job_No)+"%0D%0AClient: "+alltrim(Lastname)+", "+alltrim(Client)+"%0D%0ASpouse: "+alltrim(Spouse)

Steve, thanks, so you do the following?

                          Control type: link
Link address type: computed from fields in the grid
                          Link address: alltrim(lookupc("F",Customer,"Email","[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\customers","Customer_I"))+"&subject=RE: ATS Job: "+alltrim(Job_No)+"&[email protected]"+"&body= %0D%0A%0D%0A%0D%0A --------------------------------%0D%0AJob: "+alltrim(Job_No)+"%0D%0AClient: "+alltrim(Lastname)+", "+alltrim(Client)+"%0D%0ASpouse: "+alltrim(Spouse)

Close, all of that code is in a Calculated Field on the Grid. Let's say the calc field is named "emailcustomer". So I put emailcustomer in the grid and make it a link. Then in properties set the "Display What" to static text and set Address Type to "Field value is an email address".
