Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Date Calculation

    I am new to the this App Server stuff and I have a question. In an Alpha table, the field rules allow for a calculated value. For example, the table has a field called DateAdd and is set as a calculated field, with calculated field expression being if(dateadd = {}, date(), dateadd).

    There is a field in the table called DateMod which is a calculated field and the field expression is simply date()

    How do I do same thing in Web Component? I want the users to see the values, but not change them and to have the values assigned upon submit.

    Thanks,
    mike

    Re: Date Calculation

    Hi Mike

    The calc fields should work as they do on the desktop side. If you change the control type to "label" from "text box" it will prevent the user from making changes to that field.

    I have attached a screen shot.

    Regards,

    Jeff

      Re: Date Calculation

      I guess I didn't ask the question right. I did understand the label part, but where do I put in the calculated expression... is that some A5 five I put in, but where and how? I'm pretty new at this and I couldn't find what I was looking for in the help file. I haven't learned all the terminology yet so I don't know what to ask for.

      thanks again for your response.

        In a grid component, look at the query dialog where you chose the table to base the grid on.

          Mike

          You can create calculated fields where Al showed you. But, it sounds like you want to save the data, so the easiest way might be to just create a calculated field rule for the table. You can do this in the same place you define field rules for a desktop app. Most of the field rules don't work on the web side of things but auto increment and calc fields do. Once you have the calc field defined in the table you can just choose it like any other field for inclusion in your web app.

            Re: Date Calculation

            In the Calculated Values section --thanks Al, I put this code in:

            mgmt_co->Dateadd = if(mgmt_co->Dateadd={},date(),mgmt_co->Dateadd)
            mgmt_co->Datemod = date()
            mgmt_co->Timeadd = if(mgmt_co->Timeadd="",time(),mgmt_co->timeadd)
            mgmt_co->timemod = time()

            When I save a changed record, the date and time don't update. Sorry I'm such a pain, what am I doing wrong?

            thanks,

              Re: Date Calculation

              Mike,

              Unless I am wrong, the calculated values section inside the WAS stuff is just for displaying calc values in your grid / dialog. You would still have to save the value to your table with some xbasic in the events area of the component.

              I am new to the WAS stuff as well but it seems you have to change your mindset a bit on the web side.

              Code:
              mgmt_co->Dateadd = if(mgmt_co->Dateadd={},date(),mgmt_co->Dateadd)
              mgmt_co->Datemod = date()
              mgmt_co->Timeadd = if(mgmt_co->Timeadd="",time(),mgmt_co->timeadd)
              mgmt_co->timemod = time()
              Where the code above works on the desktop side, I think what you are doing here is actually creating calc fields that are named whatever is on the left side of the "=" sign - not saving the values to the table. You would need some code in an event for that I believe.

              Try creating the calc fields actually in the field rules area for table design and I don't think you'll have to worry about it at all. That field will just be available for use in your web component and the "back end" will handle all the updating.
